Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is da'if. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The cause of this weakness is "Muhammad bin 'Ubaydullah bin Abi Rafi'", who is "wahin" (very weak), as al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis". Another narrator in this chain is "al-Hasan bin 'Anbasah al-Warraq", about whom al-Dhahabi mentioned in "al-Mizan" that Ibn Qani' declared him weak. However, this latter narrator (al-Hasan) has been corroborated, so the real problem remains "Ibn Abi Rafi'". Reference / Source: This narration was recorded by Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (1843), and through him by Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 26/ 340, via Abd al-'Aziz bin al-Khattab, from 'Ali bin Hashim bin al-Barid, with this same chain. Details of the narration: Its wording is: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to (his uncle) al-'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): "And for you, O uncle, there is (reward) from Allah until you are pleased." Important point: This makes it clear that in the narration of the author (al-Hakim) too, the address is actually to al-'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), not to (his freed slave) Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a "mursal" narration from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib in Ibn 'Adi's "al-Kamil" 6/ 341 and Ibn 'Asakir's "Tarikh Dimashq" 26/ 341. Technical note / Defect ('illah): But its chain contains a narrator named "Musa bin 'Umayr al-Qurashi", who is "matruk" (abandoned).
