It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): My maternal uncle Jadd bin Qays took me (to Makkah) with the seventy riders of the Ansar who came as a delegation to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). At that time I was so young that I did not even have the strength to throw a stone. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us, and with him was his paternal uncle Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O uncle, take the pledge for me from these maternal uncles of yours (the Ansar)." The Ansar said: O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), lay down whatever conditions you wish for your Lord and for yourself. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "For myself I take this covenant from you: that you will protect me just as you protect your wealth and your lives." They asked: If we do that, what reward will we get? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Paradise."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of transmission, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. And there is no report more authentic than this hadith about Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) being among the early Muslims.

Grading: The hadith is sahih, and this chain is strong, as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Isabah" 1/ 468. This strength is because of Mu'awiyah bin 'Ammar al-Duhni, who is "saduq" (truthful) and there is no harm in him. Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (1757), "al-Awsat" (7968) and "al-Saghir" (1076); by Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (1719); by Abu 'Uthman Sa'id bin Muhammad al-Bahiri in the fourth part of his "Fawa'id" (70); and by Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 11/ 219, via several routes from Muhammad bin 'Imran with this same chain. Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari (3890) recorded via Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, from 'Amr bin Dinar, from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "My two maternal uncles took me with them to al-'Aqabah." Ibn 'Uyaynah said: "One of them was al-Bara' bin Ma'rur." Investigation of al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar says in "Fath al-Bari" 11/ 422: In the narration of al-Isma'ili (in his "Mustakhraj" on al-Bukhari) it came that Sufyan said: "His maternal uncles were al-Bara' bin Ma'rur and his brother," and he did not name the brother. Then al-Hafiz says: He meant "al-Jadd bin Qays", and he called him a "brother" although he was a cousin, because both are at the same level in lineage. But none of the biographers (of the Sirah) mentioned al-Jadd bin Qays among the people of al-'Aqabah; it seems he had not become Muslim then. Accordingly, Jabir's other maternal uncle was either "Tha'labah" or "'Amr". Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded in "al-Kabir" (1714) (and through him Ibn 'Asakir 11/ 219) via Jabir al-Ju'fi, from al-Sha'bi, from Jabir, who said: "We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the night of al-'Aqabah, and my maternal uncle brought me out when I was not even able to throw a stone (being young)." The story of this pledge (the second pledge of al-'Aqabah) has already passed in a longer form than here at number (4297) via Abdullah bin 'Uthman bin Khuthaym, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir.
Important point: This report does not state that al-'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) was a Muslim at that time; rather, in the narration of Ibn Ishaq (in the account of the second pledge of al-'Aqabah), from the hadith of Ka'b bin Malik, which is in Musnad Ahmad 25/ (15798) and elsewhere, it came that al-'Abbas was on the religion of his people that day.
