Muhammad bin Umar also mentioned a similar lineage and added that he was among the seventy Ansar who attended the Pledge of Aqabah, and that he used to write down the revelation for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). There is disagreement about the time of his death: one view is that he died during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar in the year 22 AH, while according to another view he died during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) in the year 30 AH, and this is the more reliable view, because Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) had ordered him to compile the Qur'an.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (3) "Muhammad bin Umar" is al-Waqidi, and the one narrating from him, "Sulayman bin Dawud", is al-Shadhakuni. Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd mentioned in his "al-Tabaqat" (3/ 462) the like of what al-Waqidi (his shaykh) said here, except that he did not attribute it to him, apart from the mention of the death of Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him), which Ibn Sa'd (3/ 466) attributed to al-Waqidi. Abu Nu'aym likewise narrated it with a chain from al-Waqidi in "al-Ma'rifah" (748). Important point: Al-Waqidi's reliance in the view he took is the statement of Muhammad bin Sirin in Ibn Sa'd (3/ 466) and elsewhere: "Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) gathered twelve men from Quraysh and the Ansar, among them Ubayy bin Ka'b and Zayd bin Thabit, to compile the Qur'an." Important point: Khalifah bin Khayyat said (as will come with the author (al-Hakim) at no. 5402): "Ubayy bin Ka'b died in the year 32 AH." And Mus'ab bin Abd Allah al-Zubayri said (as will come at no. 5403) that "Ubayy died during the caliphate of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)." Reference / Source: Ali bin al-Madini mentioned (as al-Bukhari cited from him in "al-Tarikh al-Awsat" 1/ 505) that "Ubayy died in the sixth year of Uthman's caliphate." Grading: Abu Nu'aym, in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (before report 736), judged correct the view that Ubayy bin Ka'b died during the caliphate of Uthman in the year 30 AH, and said: "Because Zirr bin Hubaysh met him during the caliphate of Uthman." Note / Clarification: We (the editors) say: He meant the report which Imam Ahmad (30/ 18090) and others recorded from Zirr bin Hubaysh, who said: "I came as a delegate during the caliphate of Uthman bin Affan, and what prompted me to come was only meeting Ubayy bin Ka'b and the Companions of the Messenger of Allah …" And its chain is "hasan". Reference / Source: And as will come with a "hasan" chain from Abd al-Rahman bin Abza, who said: "When the people fell into the affair of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) (i.e. the fitnah began), I said to Ubayy bin Ka'b …" Then he mentioned a statement of Ubayy.
