Muhammad bin Umar narrates that the kunya of Sayyiduna Hatib bin Abi Balta'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) was Abu Muhammad. He belonged to Banu Rashidah, a branch of the tribe of Lakhm. He took part in the Battles of Badr and the Trench and in all the battles with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had sent him as his envoy to al-Muqawqis, the ruler of Alexandria. He was counted among the renowned archers of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He died in Madinah at the age of 65, and Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) led his funeral prayer. He traded in food grain. He had a handsome body and a light beard; he was of medium height inclining to shortness, and his fingers were strong and fleshy.
