Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5364

It is narrated from Muhammad bin Umar that Sayyiduna Qatadah bin al-Nu'man bin Zayd bin Amr bin Sawad bin Zafar (Zafar's name was Ka'b) bin al-Khazraj bin Amr (who is al-Nabit) bin Malik bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the maternal brother of Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), had the kunya Abu Amr. He was the grandfather of Asim and Ya'qub, the sons of Umar bin Qatadah, and Asim bin Umar was one of the scholars of the sirah and other fields. Qatadah bin al-Nu'man was among the seventy Ansar who attended the Pledge of Aqabah with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was one of the renowned archers among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He took part in the Battles of Badr and Uhud. On the day of Uhud his eye (was struck, came out and) fell onto his cheek, so he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have a wife whom I love dearly, and I fear that if she sees this (damaged) eye of mine, she will find it repulsive. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned it (to its place) with his blessed hand, and it became completely sound, and even in his old age it remained the stronger and sounder of his two eyes. He took part in the Battle of the Trench and in all the battles with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and at the Conquest of Makkah the banner of Banu Zafar was with him.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Reference / Source: (2) It is in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" of Ibn Sa'd (3/ 418-419).
Important point: Among those who counted Qatadah bin al-Nu'man among the seventy who were present at al-Aqabah are Hisham bin al-Kalbi ("Nasab Ma'add", 1/ 382), Khalifah ("al-Tabaqat", p. 81) and Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri (as in "Akhbar Makkah", 2547, and "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani", 1823), among others. Ibn Sa'd (3/ 418) said: "Muhammad bin Ishaq did not mention him in his book among those who were present at al-Aqabah!"
Reference / Source: His presence at Uhud, the injury to his eye (the eyeball), and then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) putting it back as it had been and even better, was narrated by his grandson Asim bin Umar bin Qatadah, in Ibn Hisham's "al-Sirah" (2/ 82), Ibn Sa'd (3/ 419) and Ibn Abi Shaybah (12/ 161, 14/ 397).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Some narrated it as connected (mawsul) through Umar bin Qatadah, from his father Qatadah bin al-Nu'man; some made it from Asim directly from his grandfather Qatadah; and some made it from Asim, from Mahmud bin Labid. All of these have criticism in them, and the most sound is the "mursal" narration.
Important point: Asim is an eminent Tabi'i and the story happened to his grandfather, so he knew best about it; therefore this mursal narration of his is "sahih", if Allah wills.
