Abu Uthman said: I came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) with the news of the martyrdom of al-Nu'man bin Muqarrin, and he placed his hand on his face and began to weep.

Grading: (2) This report is "hasan" (good). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although this chain is "da'if" (weak) because of the weakness of Ali bin Zayd (Ibn Jud'an), this has been narrated from Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) through another "hasan" chain, as will come, and it has also been narrated through other routes. Note / Clarification: "Abu Usamah" refers to: Hammad bin Usamah, and "Abu Uthman" refers to: Abd al-Rahman bin Mall al-Nahdi. Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah recorded it in "al-Musannaf" (3/ 366, 394 and 13/ 7, 58) and al-Baladhuri in "Futuh al-Buldan" (p. 297) through the route of Hammad bin Usamah, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it in "al-'Ilal" (in the narration of his son Abdullah, 1905), al-Baladhuri (p. 297) and Ibn Abi Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (1080) through two routes from Shu'bah, with this chain. Reference / Source: Al-Baladhuri (p. 297) recorded it through the route of Hammad bin Salamah, from Ali bin Zayd, with this chain. Reference / Source: Al-Tabari in his "Tarikh" (4/ 117-120) and Ibn Hibban (4756) recorded it through the route of Jubayr bin Hayyah, mentioning the story of the battle of Nahawand. Details of the narration: In it, the messenger who came to give Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) the good news of the victory said: "Count al-Nu'man (as one whose reward is) with Allah, O Commander of the Believers" (that is, he was martyred), so Umar wept and said "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un". Grading: Its chain is "jayyid" (good). Note / Clarification: In the printed edition of al-Tabari the name "Hayyah" has been corrupted into "Hudayr". The origin of this story through this route is in "Sahih al-Bukhari" (3159), but he did not relate it in full.
