Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5346

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Usayd bin Hudayr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was one who sighed much (tender-hearted), and he used to lead us in prayer. Once he fell ill and led the prayer sitting. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit him, and the people said: O Messenger of Allah! Usayd is our imam; he is ill, and he has led us in prayer sitting. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You too pray behind him sitting, for the imam is appointed only to be followed; so when he prays sitting, you too pray behind him sitting."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (2) In the manuscripts this name was corrupted into "al-Husayn" spelled with the letter sad, whereas it is "al-Husayn" with the letter sin. It appears correctly (with sin) in "Ithaf al-Maharah" of al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar (269). See further his biography in "Ma'ani al-Akhyar" (1/ 28, biography no. 40).

Grading: (3) It is sahih (authentic) as an action of Usayd bin Hudayr. This chain can possibly be graded "hasan" (good) because of "Muhammad bin al-Husayn".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): He is Muhammad bin al-Husayn bin Abd al-Rahman bin Amr bin Sa'd bin Mu'adh (the name Amr has been dropped from his lineage here for brevity). Two narrators narrated from him and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". His narration here is from his own family, about a story concerning his people "Banu Abd al-Ashhal", since Sa'd bin Mu'adh and Usayd are both from Banu Abd al-Ashhal.
Important point: That Usayd bin Hudayr led his people in prayer while sitting and his people prayed behind him sitting has been narrated through several routes, but they do not contain the "marfu'" (Prophetic) part that is here. However, this marfu' part is not "munkar" (objectionable), since supporting reports for it have been narrated in other stories from several Companions.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (607) recorded it through the route of Muhammad bin Salih bin Qays al-Azraq (Zayd bin Hubab once attributed him as "Tammar", a date seller), from Husayn, one of the descendants of Sa'd bin Mu'adh (he is Husayn bin Abd al-Rahman bin Amr, the father of Ibn al-Husayn), from Usayd bin Hudayr.
Grading: He narrated it in this way as "munqati'" (disconnected). This Muhammad bin Salih al-Azraq is "da'if" (weak), so the narration of Muhammad bin al-Husayn from his father is preferable to it. Abu Dawud said after it: "This hadith is not connected."
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari recorded it in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (7/ 208) through the route of Ali bin Mushir, Ibn al-Mundhir in "al-Awsat" (2036) through the route of Hammad bin Salamah, and al-Daraqutni (1480) through the route of Muhammad bin Ishaq. All three narrate from Hisham bin Urwah, from Kathir bin al-Sa'ib, from Mahmud bin Labid, who said: "Usayd bin Hudayr suffered from sciatica ('irq al-nasa), and he was our imam. He would come out to us and signal to us with his hand to sit, so we would sit. He would lead us in prayer sitting, and we would be sitting too."
Grading: They mentioned it thus as "mawquf" (a Companion's statement). This is the wording of Ibn Ishaq, which is the most complete; the wording of the others is abridged. Its chain is "hasan" (good).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Bukhari added "Urwah" in the chain of his narration.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is despite the fact that Ibn Abi Hatim mentioned in "al-'Ilal" (464) that the students of Hisham bin Urwah narrate it as "from Hisham, from Kathir bin al-Sa'ib", without Urwah (as a link) in it. The aforementioned narrations of Hammad bin Salamah and Ibn Ishaq are also like this.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sufyan bin Uyaynah (as narrated by Abd al-Razzaq: 4085 and Ibn Sa'd: 3/ 560) differed from them, and narrated it from Hisham bin Urwah, from his father, that: Usayd bin Hudayr fell ill (and then he mentioned something similar).
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (3/ 560), Ibn al-Mundhir in "al-Awsat" (2035), al-Tahawi in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (14/ 313-314), Ibn Abd al-Barr in "al-Tamhid" (6/ 139) and Ibn Asakir (9/ 93) likewise recorded it as "mawquf" through the route of Bushayr bin Yasar: that Usayd bin Hudayr used to lead his people in prayer; he fell ill, so he led them in prayer sitting, and they prayed behind him sitting. This is the wording of Ibn Sa'd, and the wording of the rest is similar.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It is also with Ibn Abi Shaybah (2/ 326), but there "Abdullah bin Hubayrah al-Hadrami" is mentioned instead of Bushayr bin Yasar. Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy), except that Bushayr and Ibn Hubayrah did not meet Usayd bin Hudayr. Despite that, al-Hafiz Ibn Rajab in "Sharh al-Bukhari" (6/ 154) and Ibn Hajar in "Fath al-Bari" (3/ 206) declared its chain sahih!
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For the marfu' part alone (about the command for the followers to pray sitting behind a seated imam) there is a supporting report (shahid) from the hadith of A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) in al-Bukhari (688) and Muslim (412).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Also from the hadith of Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bukhari (689) and Muslim (411).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bukhari (722) and Muslim (414).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And from the hadith of Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Muslim (413).
General principle: These hadiths may appear to conflict with the hadith of A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) which mentions the Companions praying standing behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during his final illness while he was sitting (al-Bukhari 664, 683 and Muslim 418).
Important point: The best way of reconciling these hadiths with the hadith of his final illness is to say: the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) approval of his Companions remaining standing while he himself was sitting is evidence of "permissibility" (ibahah), and the command in the other hadiths is to be understood as a "recommendation" (nadb). Among those who adopted this reconciliation are Ibn Hazm ("al-Muhalla" 3/ 65-66) and Ibn Hajar ("Fath al-Bari" 3/ 208-209). It is one of the ways of reconciliation related by Ibn Rajab in "Fath al-Bari" (6/ 15-160) and Ibn Kathir in "al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah" (8/ 60).
