Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5302

It is narrated from Abu Amr Abdullah bin Adi bin al-Hamra' al-Khuza'i that he mentioned the building of the Ka'bah. Muhammad bin Umar (al-Waqidi) says that Abdullah bin Adi died during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (3) Its chain is "very weak" (da'if jiddan).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Musa bin Muhammad bin Ibrahim (Ibn al-Harith al-Taymi) is "munkar al-hadith" and "matruk" (abandoned). And the solitary narrations of Muhammad bin 'Umar (al-Waqidi) are not taken as proof, and this report is among his solitary narrations.
Note / Clarification: "al-Hasan" refers to Ibn al-Jahm, and "al-Husayn" refers to Ibn al-Faraj.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Waqidi is alone in describing 'Abd Allah bin 'Adi bin al-Hamra' as "Khuza'i", in his narrations cited by Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" and al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf".
Important point: As for Ibn Ishaq, he gave his lineage up to "Thaqif" (as will come under number 5937). Likewise al-Fakihi, in "Akhbar Makkah" (2138), in mentioning some of the houses and quarters of Makkah, described his father 'Adi as "Thaqafi". Then al-Fakihi mentioned him again after (2143), saying: "Mention of the quarters of the allies of Banu Zuhrah … and the house of Makhramah bin Nawfal … which, before the Khuza'is, belonged to the family of 'Adi bin al-Hamra' of Thaqif." Ibn Hibban said likewise in "al-Thiqat" (3/ 215) and "Mashahir 'Ulama' al-Amsar" (206). And Ibn Hazm in "Jawami' al-Sirah" (p. 54) and Ibn 'Abd al-Barr in "al-Durar fi Ikhtisar al-Maghazi wa al-Siyar" (p. 45), when mentioning those who openly harmed and showed enmity to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), said: "and 'Adi bin al-Hamra' al-Thaqafi."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Others differed from them and described him as "Zuhri", and this has passed in the narration of al-Zuhri (from Abu Salamah bin 'Abd al-Rahman from 'Abd Allah bin 'Adi bin al-Hamra') with a sahih chain under number (4316). Khalifah bin Khayyat said the same in his "al-Tabaqat" (p. 16), contrary to what the author (al-Hakim) will cite from him later under number (5938) with the chain of the same book "al-Tabaqat", where he described him as "Thaqafi".
Important point: What is in the book "al-Tabaqat" is the correct one, as is evident from its arrangement: he mentioned 'Abd Allah bin 'Adi among Banu Zuhrah, and when he had finished with him he said: "And among their allies", then mentioned other men; thereby he distinguished him and counted him among Banu Zuhrah themselves (min anfusihim).
Important point: Al-Tabari stated this definitively, as Ibn 'Abd al-Barr quoted from him in "al-Isti'ab" (p. 428): "He is a Zuhri, one of them themselves." Qadi Isma'il bin Ishaq also said the same (as cited in al-Tamhid 10/ 169). And Ibn Hazm stated it definitively in "al-Muhalla" (7/ 289), saying: "He is Zuhri by lineage"; the biographers followed this and recorded him as Zuhri, while some of them said: "He is also said to be Thaqafi."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But none of them set out any of his lineage except Ibn Ishaq (as has passed), from which it appears that it ends at "Thaqif". If Ibn Ishaq's statement is correct - and this is what appears - then the correct attribution is "Thaqafi", and his attribution to Banu Zuhrah is by "alliance", as al-Fakihi and Ibn Hibban (in "al-Thiqat") said. This is also what can be understood from the words of Mus'ab bin 'Abd Allah al-Zubayri in the narration before this one, where he said: "And among their allies is 'Abd Allah bin 'Adi bin al-Hamra' al-Zuhri", meaning he was an ally of Banu Zuhrah.
Reference / Source: The hadith to which the author alluded with his words "then he mentioned the building of the Ka'bah": al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar cited in "Fath al-Bari" (5/ 365) what indicates it, saying: In al-Fakihi there is, from the hadith of Abu 'Amr bin 'Adi bin al-Hamra', that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) in this story: "And I would have included in it (the Ka'bah) four cubits of the Hijr."
Note / Clarification: We could not find this narration in the printed edition of al-Fakihi's "Akhbar Makkah".
