(5). Abu Nawfal bin Abi Aqrab narrates that when al-Harith bin Hisham left Makkah (for jihad), the people of Makkah were extremely grieved, and everyone came out to bid him farewell. When he reached a high point of al-Batha and the people stood around him weeping, seeing the people's grief he said: "O people, I have not left you because my own life is dearer to me than yours, nor because I prefer another city over your city. Rather, (the truth is that) some men of Quraysh had already set out in this matter (emigration and jihad). By Allah, they (went ahead of us) not merely on account of tribal lineage, but on the basis of their (faithful) households. By Allah, today even if the mountains of Makkah were turned to gold and we spent them in the path of Allah, we could not attain (the merit of) their early days. And by Allah, if they have gone ahead of us in this world, we seek to share with them in the reward of the Hereafter. So let a man fear Allah who sets out to Syria as a warrior and is granted martyrdom."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) "al-Suwa": the plural of "suwwah". It means rugged, raised ground that does not reach the height of a mountain.
Note / Clarification: (2) In manuscripts (Z) and (S) the phrase is written "wa lakin min _mr baha", and in (M) "mr _mr baha", the sense of which we could not make out. Most likely it is a corruption of the wording of Ibn al-Mubarak's "al-Jihad" (101), which we have adopted (in the text). Others also narrated it by way of Ibn al-Mubarak, but there it reads "wa la min buyutatiha" (in the negative). What is established from our manuscripts (in the affirmative) has a good meaning; it is as if he were saying: they are not of its (Quraysh's) people of lineage, but rather of their allies and clients who live with them in Makkah. And Allah knows best.
Note / Clarification: (3) In manuscripts (S) and (M) it is "fa-unfiqat"; what is adopted in the text is from (Z) and (B).
Note / Clarification: (4) In manuscript (Z) this word is "ghadiyan" (with dal) instead of zay ("ghaziyan").
Grading: (5) Its narrators are trustworthy (thiqah), but it is "mursal", because Abu Nawfal bin Abi 'Aqrab did not live in the time of al-Harith bin Hisham. 11/ 499. Reference / Source: This is in Ibn al-Mubarak's "al-Jihad" (101), and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir recorded it in "Tarikh Dimashq" (11/ 499).
