Abdullah bin Ikrimah narrates that on the day of the Conquest of Makkah, al-Harith bin Hisham and Abdullah bin Abi Rabi'ah came to Umm Hani bint Abi Talib and sought her protection. They said: "We are under your protection," and she granted them protection. Then Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) entered upon them, looked at them and drew his sword on them. As he was about to attack them, Umm Hani clung to him and said: "Of all people, you do this to me? You will have to finish me off before them." Ali said: "Are you giving protection to polytheists?" Then he went out from there. Umm Hani says: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have a complaint about my brother Ali; I barely escaped from him. I had given protection to two relatives of mine, and he rushed at them to kill them." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He had no right to do that. We have given protection to whom you gave protection, and granted safety to whom you granted safety." So she went back to them and informed them, and the two of them went off to their homes. It was said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "Al-Harith bin Hisham and Abdullah bin Abi Rabi'ah are sitting in their gathering, wrapped in fine saffron-dyed sheets." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no room for laying hands on them; we have granted them safety." Al-Harith bin Hisham says: I felt ashamed that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) should see me, because on every occasion I had opposed him (peace and blessings be upon him) alongside the polytheists. Then I remembered his (peace and blessings be upon him) kindness and mercy, and I met him (peace and blessings be upon him) as he was entering the mosque. He (peace and blessings be upon him) was very pleased to see me and stopped until I reached him (peace and blessings be upon him). I greeted him (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam and bore witness to the truth (the testimony of faith). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "All praise is for Allah who has guided you. A man of understanding like you could not have remained ignorant of the reality of Islam." Al-Harith says: By Allah, I have never seen anything like Islam of which a person had (previously) been ignorant.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) The one who said this is "Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi".
Note / Clarification: (1) What has been adopted in the text is from manuscript (M); the other manuscripts are inconsistent in its spelling. One says "tafaddala" when the wearer crosses the ends of his two garments over his shoulders in opposite directions, or wears a single garment. The forms "tafa''ala" and "ifta'ala" are used interchangeably, as in "istama'a" and "tasamma'a", "iddahana" and "tadahhana".
Reference / Source: (2) This is in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (6/ 83) - and by way of it Ibn 'Asakir (11/ 495-496) recorded it - from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi. Technical note / Defect ('illah): No one narrated from Salit bin Muslim other than al-Waqidi and al-Qa'nabi, and al-Waqidi attributed him to 'Amir bin Lu'ayy. His teacher 'Abd Allah bin 'Ikrimah (Ibn 'Abd al-Rahman bin al-Harith bin Hisham) is among the Followers of the Successors (atba' al-tabi'in), so this report is "mu'dal". Important point: However, al-Waqidi has another connected chain for the story of the protection (jiwar), which he mentioned in his "al-Maghazi" (2/ 830). By way of it al-Azraqi recorded it in "Akhbar Makkah" (2/ 161-162). A group corroborated him in it, in Ahmad (44/ 26892 and 45/ 27380) and al-Nasa'i (8631), but the story of al-Harith bin Hisham's acceptance of Islam does not occur in their narrations. 2/ 227. Reference / Source: The basis of the story of Umm Hani' (may Allah be pleased with her) granting protection is in the "Two Sahihs", i.e. Sahih al-Bukhari (357) and Sahih Muslim (719/ 82), but there it mentions granting protection to one man other than these two. See further: Ibn Hajar's discussion in "Fath al-Bari" (2/ 227).
(4307). Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) There is no harm in the narrators above al-Waqidi, but al-Waqidi is alone in narrating it with this chain and no one corroborated him. Rather, he brought something objectionable (munkar) in this narration of his, namely the marfu' part at the end of the hadith, which contradicts the marfu' part at its beginning. The beginning states explicitly that Makkah is the most beloved place to Allah, while the end states explicitly that Madinah is the most beloved place to Allah. This suffices as evidence of the weakness of this narration. Important point: This last marfu' phrase is also narrated on its own from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (see the author (al-Hakim), number 4307), but its chain is extremely weak (wahin); indeed al-Dhahabi and others judged it "fabricated" (mawdu'). And it is sahih and established that Makkah is the land most beloved to Allah, as has passed in the discussion of hadith number (4307). 11/ 492. Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd recorded this narration of al-Waqidi in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (6/ 84) from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi with this chain. And by way of Ibn Sa'd, Ibn 'Asakir recorded it in "Tarikh Dimashq" (11/ 492).
Reference / Source: (2) This is in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (6/ 84-85) from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi.
