Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5274

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that a son of his died, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote him a letter of condolence: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. From Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, to Mu'adh bin Jabal. Peace be upon you. I praise before you Allah, besides whom there is no god. To proceed: May Allah make your reward great, grant you patience, and grant us and you gratitude. Indeed, our lives, our wealth and our families are among the pure gifts of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and His trusts placed with us for a time. Allah gave you joy and delight through this son, and has now taken him back from you in return for a great reward. If you seek the reward (from Allah), then blessings, mercy and guidance from Allah are for you, so be patient. Let not your wailing and lamenting waste your reward, so that you come to regret it later. And know that weeping and wailing does not bring anything back, nor does it remove grief, and whatever decree is to descend will surely come to pass. Peace be with you."
This hadith is gharib hasan, but Mujashi' bin Amr does not meet the condition of this book.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This narration is "mawdu'" (fabricated).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis": "This is a fabrication of Mujashi'." We (the editors) say: this Mujashi' bin 'Amr was declared a "liar" by Yahya bin Ma'in; Ibn Hibban said: "He fabricates hadith in the names of trustworthy narrators and narrates fabricated reports from trustworthy people"; Abu Hatim and al-Daraqutni called him "matruk" (abandoned); and al-Bukhari, al-'Uqayli and Abu Ahmad al-Hakim called him "munkar al-hadith".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): A report like this is also narrated with other chains, but all of them are "talif" (utterly worthless) and contain narrators accused of lying. Abu Nu'aym al-Asbahani said in "al-Hilyah" (1/242): "All these narrations are weak and not established, because the death of Mu'adh's son occurred several years after the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). In fact, one of the Companions wrote (a letter of condolence) to him, and the narrator made an error and attributed it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Moreover, Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) was far too great and learned to lament and be overcome by grief instead of submitting …"
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn al-A'rabi in his "Mu'jam" (946), al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (20/(324)), in "al-Awsat" (83) and in "al-Du'a'" (1216), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/242), al-Shajari in his "Amali" (2/299), Ibn 'Asakir (58/449) and Ibn Hajar in "Nata'ij al-Afkar" (4/366) through the route of Ahmad bin Yahya bin Khalid al-Raqqi, from 'Amr bin Bakr bin Bakkar al-Qa'nabi al-Basri, from Mujashi' bin 'Amr, with this chain.
Note / Clarification: In the book "al-Du'a'" (the narrator's name) is written "'Amr bin Bakr al-Saksaki", which is a mistake; it has been corrected from al-Tabarani's other two books and all the other sources (the correct name being al-Qa'nabi).
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/242), Ibn 'Asakir (58/448), Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Mawdu'at" (1790) and Ibn Hajar in "Nata'ij al-Afkar" (4/367) through the route of Muhammad bin Sa'id al-Maslub, from 'Ubadah bin Nusayy, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ghanm, from Mu'adh bin Jabal.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Sa'id was given the name "al-Maslub" (the crucified) because he was executed for "zandaqah" (heresy) and crucified. A group of the imams explicitly declared him a liar, as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar stated.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Muhammad bin Dawud bin 'Ali al-Zahiri in "al-Zahrah" (p. 546) and Abu al-Layth al-Samarqandi in "Tanbih al-Ghafilin" (340) through the route of Abu Dawud Sulayman bin 'Amr al-Nakha'i, from Muhajir bin Abi al-Hasan al-Shami, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ghanm, from Mu'adh bin Jabal.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This Abu Dawud al-Nakha'i is an outright liar (kadhdhab) who used to fabricate hadiths.
Reference / Source: This hadith is in "Nuskhat Nubayt bin Sharit" (372) with a fourth chain: from Abu al-Hasan Ahmad bin al-Qasim bin al-Rayyan al-Lakki, from Ahmad bin Ishaq bin Ibrahim bin Nubayt bin Sharit, from his father, from his grandfather, from Nubayt bin Sharit, from Mu'adh bin Jabal.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Dhahabi said in "al-Mizan" about Ahmad bin Ishaq: "It is not permissible to use him as proof; he is a liar (kadhdhab). He narrated from his father from his grandfather a manuscript containing calamities (fabrications)."
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "Tarikh Baghdad" (2/438) through the route of Ishaq bin Najih al-Malati, from 'Ata', from Ibn 'Abbas: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote to Mu'adh …"
Technical note / Defect ('illah): And this Ishaq bin Najih is a "kadhdhab" (liar).
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Muhammad bin Khalaf (known as Waki') in "al-Ghurar min al-Akhbar" (as in al-Suyuti's "al-La'ali' al-Masnu'ah" 2/355) from Abu Isma'il bin Ibrahim bin Hasan bin 'Ali bin Abi Talib, from his paternal uncle, from Ishaq bin Ja'far bin Muhammad, from his father, from his grandfather, as "mursal".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is a "muzlim" (dark/obscure) chain, and it contains narrators whom we have not been able to identify.
