Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5249

It is narrated from Ibn Ishaq, concerning those who took part in the Pledge of Aqabah, that among them was Mu'adh bin Jabal bin Amr bin Aws bin A'idh bin Adi bin Ka'b bin Ghanm bin Sa'd bin Ali bin Asad bin Saridah bin Tazid bin Jusham. He belonged to Banu Salimah. He took part in the Battle of Badr and in all the battles alongside the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He passed away in the plague of Amwas in Syria during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). Banu Salimah attributed him to themselves because he had established brotherhood with one of their men.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (2) This name is with the (two-dotted) letter ta', as Imam al-Daraqutni recorded its vocalisation in "al-Mu'talif wa al-Mukhtalif" (1/180), and others likewise.

Reference / Source: (3) This content is in Ibn Hisham's "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" (1/463-464), except that there he said: "Banu Salimah claimed him (as belonging to their tribe) because he was the maternal brother of Sahl bin Muhammad bin al-Jadd bin Qays bin Sakhrah."
Details of the narration: It is the same in all the other narrations from Muhammad bin Ishaq, and likewise in the narration of Ridwan bin Ahmad al-Saydalani (from Ahmad bin 'Abd al-Jabbar) in Ibn 'Asakir (58/395).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): So the text that appears here with the author (Imam al-Hakim) is "gharib" (unusual).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the other students of Ibn Ishaq added "Udayy" before "Sa'd" in the lineage of Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him). This is also the view of Ibn al-Kalbi, Shabab and Musa bin 'Uqbah, as Ibn 'Asakir (58/393) reported, and this is what is well known in his lineage.
Details of the narration: However, there is a difference over the name "Ghanm". Ibn Hisham in "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" (1/463), quoting Ibn Ishaq via Ziyad al-Bakka'i, mentioned "'Amr" in place of "Ghanm" (and sometimes "'Adi" is mentioned in its place), but in this lineage "'Amr" is what is well known.
Important point: The other students of Ibn Ishaq dropped this man's name ('Amr/Ghanm) from this lineage, whereas the correct view is that it should be mentioned.
