It is narrated from Abdullah bin Shawdhab that on the day of Badr, the father of Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) kept persistently setting his sights on him (to attack him), while Abu Ubaydah kept avoiding facing him. But when his father persisted greatly (in attacking), Abu Ubaydah turned towards him and killed him. So when he killed his (idolater) father, Allah Almighty revealed this verse concerning him: "You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers or their sons" [Surah al-Mujadilah: 22] (to the end).

Grading: (3) Its chain is weak because of "i'dal" (being mu'dal), since "'Abdullah bin Shawdhab" is one of the followers of the Successors (atba' al-tabi'in). Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, Muqatil bin Hayyan narrated something similar from Murrah al-Hamdani from Ibn Mas'ud, except that he said "the day of Uhud" (see: the Tafsir of al-Tha'labi 9/264). And in our strong opinion Muqatil did not meet Murrah. Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Bayhaqi in "al-Kubra" (9/27), and through his route Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (25/446), from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim, with this chain. Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (360), and through his route Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (558) and Ibn 'Asakir (25/446-447), from Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi, from Asad bin Musa, with this chain. Note / Clarification: "Al-all" is the plural of "al-allah": a spear with a broad blade. Reference / Source: Ibn 'Asakir (25/447) quoted al-Waqidi as denying that the father of Abu 'Ubaydah lived into the time of Islam, and also denying the statement of the people of Syria that Abu 'Ubaydah met his father in battle and killed him. Al-Waqidi said: I asked some men of Banu Fihr (among them Zufar bin Muhammad and others) and they said: his father died before Islam. And the people of Syria attribute that (report) to al-Awza'i. Important point: Ibn 'Asakir said: "This is a mistake in this statement of al-Waqidi."
