Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5221

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Utbah bin Ghazwan (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Quraysh: "Is there anyone among you who is not from you?" They said: "(There is no outsider,) but there is our sister's son, Utbah bin Ghazwan." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The sister's son of a people is counted among them."
The mention of Sayyiduna Utbah bin Ghazwan in this hadith is very rare. His virtues are many, and this is among the greatest of his virtues. The narrations of Sayyiduna Utbah bin Ghazwan from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) are very few. We have written from him a hadith that we found very rare, so I am mentioning it, even though al-Ghalabi does not meet the condition of this book.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In the manuscripts this word has been corrupted into "al-Nasa'i", whereas it is "al-Sami", an ascription to "Samah bin Lu'ayy". And he is a Basran, not a Nasa'i.

Grading: (2) Its chain is "da'if" because the status of "'Utbah bin Ibrahim bin 'Utbah bin Ghazwan" is unknown, and his father Ibrahim is not known except through this chain. Al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis": "Its chain is dark (muzlim)."
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Kabir" [17/(291)] from al-Hasan bin 'Ali al-Ma'mari with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi 'Asim recorded it in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (302), and via him Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (5340), from 'Abd al-Malik bin Bashir al-Sami, with this same chain.
Important point: It is authentically established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said this in his famous address to the Ansar on the occasion of the Battle of Hunayn.
Reference / Source: As in the hadith of Anas bin Malik in Ahmad [20/(12766), (13084)], al-Bukhari (3528), Muslim (1059) and others. It contains no mention of 'Utbah bin Ghazwan.
