Muhammad bin Umar narrates from his shaykhs, in mentioning Utbah bin Ghazwan (may Allah be pleased with him), that his kunyah was Abu Abdullah, and according to one view it was Abu Ghazwan. It is reported about him that he was a tall and handsome man. He was among those who accepted Islam early, and he made the second emigration to the land of Abyssinia. He was counted among the renowned archers of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and it was he who founded the city of Basrah. He passed away during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) at Ma'din Bani Sulaym, while he was on his way to Basrah as its governor on behalf of Sayyiduna Umar. Then his slave Suwayd came to Sayyiduna Umar with his belongings and his estate. Ibn Umar says that Utbah bin Ghazwan passed away in the year 15 AH, and according to one view in 17 AH, when he was 57 years old.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Reference / Source: (2) It is in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" [3/92 and 9/5, 7] as his own statement, and he attributes part of it to his shaykh al-Waqidi. But he said: "He died in Basrah in the year 17 AH", stating it firmly. 1/ 497 - 499. Note / Clarification: There is disagreement over the year of his death and his age, which you can see in "Tarikh Baghdad" [1/497-499].
