Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5214

Muhammad bin Umar said: The father of Amr bin al-Tufayl, al-Tufayl bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), remained with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) until he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away. Then, when the Arabs apostatised, he went out for jihad until the Muslims were done with (the trial of) Tulayhah (the Liar) and the entire land of Najd. Then he advanced with the Muslims towards al-Yamamah, and his son Amr bin al-Tufayl was with him. Amr bin al-Tufayl went out (onto the battlefield), was wounded and his hand was cut off. Then he recovered and his wound healed. Once he was sitting with Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) when food was brought, and he moved aside from the food (because of his severed hand). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "What is the matter with you that you moved aside; is it because of your hand?" He said: "Yes." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah, I will not taste it until I include your (severed) hand in it. By Allah, there is no one among all these people except you, part of whose body (a hand) has gone to Paradise before him." Then, during the time of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he went out with the Muslims to the Battle of Yarmuk and was martyred there.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Reference / Source: (3) It is in "Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd" [4/226] from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi, from 'Abdullah bin Ja'far al-Makhrami, from 'Abd al-Wahid bin Abi 'Awn al-Dawsi, from al-Tufayl bin 'Amr as "munqati'" (because 'Abd al-Wahid did not meet al-Tufayl).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And the like of it (without the story of 'Umar bin al-Khattab) is reported from Ibn Ishaq [see: Sirat Ibn Hisham 1/385].
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This story of 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) is also reported involving "Mu'ayqib bin Abi Fatimah al-Dawsi": A vessel of water would be brought to 'Umar bin al-Khattab and he would give it to Mu'ayqib (a man in whom leprosy had spread rapidly), who would drink from it; then 'Umar would take it from his hand and place his mouth where his mouth had been and drink. (The narrator says:) I understood that 'Umar did this so that no notion of contagion ('adwa) should enter his heart.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd recorded it in "al-Tabaqat" [4/110], and al-Tabari in "Tahdhib al-Athar" (Musnad 'Ali, p. 27), with a "hasan chain".
Note / Clarification: The meaning of his words "أُسوِيَ يدك فيه" is: put your hand into it and immerse it fully. It is derived from "aswa fi al-shay'", said when someone puts (a hand, etc.) fully into something.
