Mus'ab bin Abdullah al-Zubayri said: The lineage of Nu'aym bin al-Nahham (may Allah be pleased with him) is Nu'aym bin Abdullah bin Khalid bin Asid bin Abd Awf bin Ubayd bin Uwayj bin Adi bin Ka'b. He accepted Islam before the emigration of those who emigrated to Abyssinia. He is called 'al-Nahham', and he was given this title because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I heard his clearing of the throat in Paradise." 'Al-Nahmah' means sound.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) At this place in al-Mustadrak the name of Abu Bakr bin Baluyah's shaykh is written as "al-Hasan bin 'Ali bin Shabib al-Ma'mari", whereas the author (al-Hakim) usually brings the reports of Mus'ab al-Zubayri with the chain "Ibn Baluyah from Ibrahim bin Ishaq al-Harbi from Mus'ab". This appears to be an "error" (wahm) of the author, because Ibn Baluyah also has narrations from al-Ma'mari, so perhaps that is how the mistake arose. All of Mus'ab's reports with him come only through "Ibn Baluyah from al-Harbi".
184. Reference / Source: (2) See "Tarikh Ibn Abi Khaythamah" [second volume (2381)] and "Tarikh Dimashq" [62/179, 180, 184]. Technical note / Defect ('illah): This report has been mentioned by several authorities on genealogy (such as Mus'ab al-Zubayri, Ibn Hisham, Ibn al-Barqi and al-Zubayr bin Bakkar). Al-Waqidi narrated it with a "mursal" chain (see Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd 4/129), in which he is alone. Important point: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "Fath al-Bari" [8/135]: "This is the narration of al-Waqidi, which is weak; the sahih narrations cannot be rejected on the basis of it." We say: that is, what occurs in the sahih narrations of al-Bukhari and others, where Nu'aym is called "Ibn al-Nahham" (son of al-Nahham) (meaning that the description "al-Nahham" belongs to his father, not to him), is correct. Al-Hafiz refuted those who declared the sahih narrations wrong on the basis of this mursal narration in which al-Waqidi is alone.
