Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 52

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Islam has prominent signs and landmarks, like the signs (and landmarks) of a road."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari, for he narrated from Muhammad bin Khalaf al-Asqalani and used Thawr bin Yazid al-Shami as evidence. As for Khalid bin Ma'dan hearing from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah, that is not unlikely, for al-Walid bin Muslim reported through Thawr bin Yazid his (Khalid's) statement: "I met seventeen of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." And if it occurs to someone's mind that this text is shadhdh (anomalous), let him look into the two books (Bukhari and Muslim), where he will find anomalous texts which have only a single chain and which are astonishing; then let him judge this hadith by analogy with them. Another hadith with this same chain is as follows:

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) In our manuscripts this word is written "dawa" (with dad), which is a "tashif" (a dotting error). The lexicographers recorded and explained it with "sad". Abu Ubayd in "Gharib al-Hadith" (4/ 183) quotes Abu Amr bin al-Ala' that the correct word is "al-suwa": stone markers set up in desolate, unknown deserts so that the routes can be found by them; its singular is "suwwah".

Grading: (3) The hadith is "sahih" provided that Khalid bin Ma'dan heard it from Abu Hurayrah, because Ibn Abi Hatim quoted his father in "al-Marasil" (187): "He lived in the time of Abu Hurayrah, but he does not mention hearing from him".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Ubayd narrated it in "al-Iman" (3) (and by his way al-Lalaka'i (1688) and Abd al-Ghani al-Maqdisi (9)) by way of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Attar, with "a man" (unnamed) between Khalid bin Ma'dan and Abu Hurayrah; but Yahya al-Attar is da'if (weak). All the other narrators from Thawr contradicted him and dropped this man.
Reference / Source: Al-Shajari recorded this hadith combined with the next one in "al-Amali" (1/ 38) by way of Hisham bin Ammar, from al-Walid bin Muslim, with his chain.
Reference / Source: Muhammad bin Nasr al-Marwazi (405), al-Tabarani (Musnad al-Shamiyyin: 429), Ibn al-Sunni (160), Ibn Shahin (487) and Abu Nu'aym (al-Hilyah: 5/ 217) narrated it through various routes from Thawr bin Yazid.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) This is an oversight ("dhuhul") by the author, because this "Muhammad bin Khalaf al-Asqalani" is not "Ibn Abi al-Sari". Moreover, al-Bukhari narrated nothing from him; rather he narrated from "Muhammad bin Khalaf al-Haddadi al-Baghdadi al-Muqri'". As for "Muhammad bin Abi al-Sari" (whose name is Muhammad bin al-Mutawakkil), the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) narrated nothing from him, and the statements of the critics (al-jarh wa al-ta'dil) about him differ.

General principle: (2) Here "shudhudh" means "tafarrud" (being alone in narrating), i.e. a thiqah narrator is alone in reporting a hadith and no one else reports it with that chain. It does not mean the shudhudh in which a thiqah contradicts someone more reliable than himself. The author himself defined shadh in his book "Ma'rifat Ulum al-Hadith" (p. 119): "Shadh is a hadith in which one thiqah narrator is alone, and the hadith has no basis corroborating that thiqah".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) Rather, it is part of the preceding hadith; everyone who recorded it other than al-Hakim recorded it that way (combined).
