Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5162

Khalifah bin Khayyat relates that Sayyiduna Khalid bin Sa'id bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred at the Battle of Marj al-Suffar. This took place in the year 13 AH, and when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, he was serving as his (peace and blessings be upon him) governor in Yemen.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In the manuscripts this word was corrupted into "al-Makhzumi", whereas the correct form is what we have established. For "al-Walid bin Hisham" is in fact "Ibn Qahdham bin Sulayman bin Dhakwan", who is al-Azdi, al-Jarmi, al-Basri. There is no mention of "Makhzum" in his lineage, neither by descent nor by clientage (wala').

Grading: (2) Its narrators are "unobjectionable" (la ba'sa bihim). Al-Walid bin Hisham, his father and his grandfather have each been narrated from by a group, and Ibn Hibban mentioned them in "al-Thiqat".
Note / Clarification: Indeed, Imam al-Dhahabi said about al-Walid's grandfather "Qahdham" in "Tarikh al-Islam": "I do not know of anything wrong with him." We say: this Qahdham is a Successor (tabi'i).
Reference / Source: This narration is in "Tarikh Khalifah bin Khayyat" (p. 120), and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir narrated it in "Tarikh Dimashq" [16/ 84 and 46/ 28].

Note / Clarification: (3) In "Tarikh Khalifah" (p. 97) the words are: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed Khalid bin Sa'id bin al-'As as governor over San'a'."
Important point: And in the following narrations it will come that Khalid bin Sa'id was the governor of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) over Yemen.
