Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are "thiqah", but Ibn Jurayj ('Abd al-Malik bin 'Abd al-'Aziz) is a "mudallis" and he has narrated with "'an'anah" (using "from"). However, Abu al-Zubayr (Muhammad bin Muslim bin Tadrus) has explicitly stated his hearing, as will come later, and he is also corroborated.
Technical note / Isolated narration: The mention of 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) in this report is "not mahfuz"; it is one of the things in which the author (al-Hakim) is "alone" (munfarid) in this book of his, and al-Bayhaqi narrated it from him in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (5/96).
Details of the narration: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it again in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (7/310), "Shu'ab al-Iman" (5996) and "al-Adab" (549) from the author (al-Hakim) with this same chain of his, but there he did not mention 'Umar bin al-Khattab; rather he mentioned it in the passive form: "Abu Quhafah was brought...".
Reference / Source: Likewise Yahya bin Ibrahim al-Muzakki (the transmitter of "Musnad 'Abdullah bin Wahb") narrated it from Abu al-'Abbas Muhammad bin Ya'qub al-Asamm, from Bahr bin Nasr, from Ibn Wahb, and it does not mention 'Umar bin al-Khattab. By way of him it was recorded by al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (7/310) and "al-Adab" (549), Ibn al-Haddad al-Asbahani in "Jami' al-Sahihayn" (2361) and al-Dhahabi in "Mu'jam Shuyukhihi" (1/113).
Reference / Source: Likewise several narrators narrated it from Bahr bin Nasr without mentioning 'Umar in the report; among them are Abu 'Awanah ("Sahih" 1512 and 8706), Yahya bin Muhammad bin Sa'id ("Majlisan min Amalihi" 27) and al-Tahawi ("Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" 3683).
Reference / Source: A group also narrated it from 'Abdullah bin Wahb without mentioning 'Umar; among them are Abu al-Tahir Ahmad bin 'Amr bin al-Sarh (Muslim 2102, Abu Dawud 4204, Ibn Hibban 5471, al-Bayhaqi "Shu'ab al-Iman" 5996), Ahmad bin Sa'id al-Hamdani (Abu Dawud 4204), and Yunus bin 'Abd al-A'la (al-Nasa'i 9294, al-Tabari "Tahdhib al-Athar" p. 484, Abu 'Awanah 1512 and 8706).
Technical note / Not preserved: Likewise, in the hadith of Jabir bin 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) the command "to avoid black dye" (ijtinab al-sawad) is also "not mahfuz". As in the narration of Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir (al-Tayalisi 1860, Ibn Sa'd 6/79, Ahmad 23/14641, Abu 'Awanah 8709, al-Baghawi "Musnad Ibn al-Ja'd" 2652): Zuhayr asked Abu al-Zubayr: "Did Jabir narrate to you that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said concerning Abu Quhafah: 'And keep him away from black dye'?" He said: "No." These are the words of al-Tayalisi, and the words of the others are close to it. From this narration of Zuhayr we benefit that Abu al-Zubayr explicitly stated that he heard this hadith from Jabir, but it contains only the command to change the white hair, not to avoid black dye.
Details of the narration: Others besides these also narrated it from Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah, limiting their narrations to the command to change Abu Quhafah's white hair, without the command to avoid black dye, and without mentioning Zuhayr's question to Abu al-Zubayr. Among them are Imam Muslim (2102), Abu 'Awanah (1513, 8707, 8708) and al-Tabarani (al-Kabir 8327).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Zuhayr's narration is also supported by the narration of "'Azrah bin Thabit", which will come with the author (al-Hakim) at number (5146) from Abu al-Zubayr from Jabir, with the wording: "Dye his beard." It does not mention the command to avoid black dye.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In Abu al-Zubayr's narration, "Ibn Jurayj" was corroborated in mentioning the command to avoid black dye by "Layth bin Abi Sulaym" (see Ma'mar's "al-Jami'" 20179, Ibn Sa'd 6/79, Ibn Abi Shaybah 8/432, Ahmad 22/14402 and 14455, Ibn Majah 3624, al-Tabari "Tahdhib al-Athar" p. 485, Abu 'Awanah 8710, al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi "al-Manhiyyat" p. 197, al-Tabarani 8324 and 8325, Abu Nu'aym "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" 4913, al-Khatib "Talkhis al-Mutashabih" 1/430, al-Baghawi "Sharh al-Sunnah" 3179).
Criticism: But this Layth bin Abi Sulaym is "sayyi' al-hifz" (of poor memory).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani also corroborated him (see Abu 'Awanah 1514 and 8710, al-Tabarani 8326). And its chain is "sahih".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Al-Mughirah bin Muslim also corroborated him (see al-Tabari "Tahdhib al-Athar" p. 485), but in the chain leading to him is al-Tabari's shaykh "Muhammad bin Humayd al-Razi", and he is "weak".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Al-Ajlah bin 'Abdullah al-Kindi also corroborated all of them (see Abu Ya'la 1819, al-Tabarani "al-Awsat" 1819 and "al-Saghir" 483, al-Khatib "Tarikh Baghdad" 10/197). And its chain is "hasan".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Matar bin Tahman al-Warraq also corroborated them (see al-Tabarani "al-Kabir" 8325, Abu Nu'aym "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" 4913). But in the chain leading to him there is a "matruk" narrator.
Technical note / Preference: The "sahih" narration from Matar al-Warraq is the one narrated by 'Abd al-'Aziz bin 'Abd al-Samad al-'Ammi (who is a thiqah hafiz) (see al-Tabari "Tahdhib al-Athar" p. 483, al-Tabarani "al-Kabir" 8328), from Matar al-Warraq, from Abu Raja' al-'Utaridi, from Jabir bin 'Abdullah, with these words: "Take him to some of his women so that they change it (the white hair)", so they took him and dyed it red.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan", and it agrees with the narration of Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah and 'Azrah bin Thabit (from Abu al-Zubayr from Jabir).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, there remain the narrations of Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani and al-Ajlah al-Kindi, which agree with the narration of Ibn Jurayj, and the chains of both are unobjectionable. Perhaps Abu al-Zubayr (Muhammad bin Muslim) himself sometimes "inserted" (mudraj) the command "to avoid black dye" into the hadith of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), relying on the narrations of other Companions (as the mention of avoiding black dye will come later).
Details of the narration: When Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah verified it with Abu al-Zubayr and questioned him, Abu al-Zubayr made clear that he did not hear the command "to avoid black dye" from Jabir. So this is what is reliable in the hadith of Jabir.
Grading: Therefore the hadith of Jabir bin 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) is "sahih" without the words "to avoid black dye" and without the mention of "'Umar bin al-Khattab". And Allah knows best.
Important point: However, the command "to avoid black dye" in the story of Abu Quhafah is established from Companions other than Jabir bin 'Abdullah.
Reference / Source: Thus Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned it, in Musnad Ahmad [20/ (12635)], Sahih Ibn Hibban (5472) and other books, and its chain is sahih.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A similar narration is also reported from Asma' bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her).
Reference / Source: It is found with a "hasan chain" in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat" [6/ 78] and al-Tahawi's "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (3684).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, most of the hadith scholars who recorded the hadith of Asma' bint Abi Bakr narrated it only with the wording of "the command to change the white hair", without the command "to avoid black dye". For example, Ibn Hisham in "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" [2/ 405], Musnad Ahmad [44/ (26956)], Sahih Ibn Hibban (7208), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" [24/ (236)], and Abu Nu'aym in "Fada'il al-Khulafa' al-Rashidin" (67) and "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (4912).
Important point: And this (the absence of these words) agrees exactly with the preserved narration of Jabir bin 'Abdullah concerning the story of Abu Quhafah.
General principle: In principle, a prohibition has been reported against changing white hair with black dye.
Reference / Source: As in the hadith of 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) in Musnad Ahmad [4/ (2470)], Sunan Abi Dawud (4212) and Sunan al-Nasa'i (9293).
Details of the narration: Its words are: "There will be people at the end of time who will dye with this black dye, like the breasts of pigeons; they will not even smell the fragrance of Paradise."
Grading: And its chain is sahih.
