It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I saw a cluster of dates for Abu Jahl in Paradise." Then, when Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Umm Salamah! This is it (that cluster)." Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) relates that Ikrimah complained to him (peace and blessings be upon him) that whenever he passed through Madinah, it was said of him: "This is the son of the enemy of Allah, Abu Jahl." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to deliver a sermon and said: "People are like mines; those who were best of them in the Jahiliyyah are the best of them in Islam, provided they gain understanding of the religion. Do not hurt a Muslim on account of a disbeliever."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is "weak". Ya'qub bin Muhammad al-Zuhri is "layyin al-hadith" (soft, weak) and narrates from unknown shaykhs, and his shaykh here, "al-Muttalib bin Kathir", is majhul and not known. Al-Dhahabi in "al-Talkhis" declared it defective because of the presence of two weak narrators in its chain. We say: perhaps he meant Muhammad bin Sinan and Ya'qub bin Muhammad, but Muhammad bin Sinan is corroborated. Reference / Source: Ya'qub bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ahmad al-Jassas narrated it in his "al-Fawa'id" (as cited in Ibn Hajr's "al-Isabah" 4/538), and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (41/60) and Ibn al-Athir in "Usd al-Ghabah" (3/570), from Muhammad bin Sinan al-Qazzaz with this same chain. Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari narrated it in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (mu'allaq, 3/412), and al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (23/673) by way of Muhammad bin 'Ubadah al-Wasiti. Both of them (al-Bukhari and Muhammad bin 'Ubadah) narrate it from Ya'qub bin Muhammad al-Zuhri.
