Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5121

It is narrated from Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman that Sayyiduna Tulayb bin Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam in the house of al-Arqam. Then he went to his mother, Arwa bint Abd al-Muttalib (who was the paternal aunt of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)), and said: I have followed Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and have submitted to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. His mother said: Truly, your maternal uncle's son (Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)) is the most deserving of your help and support. By Allah! If we had the ability to do what men are able to do, we too would follow him and defend him. Tulayb says: I said: O my mother! What is stopping you from accepting Islam and following him?! Your brother Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) has already accepted Islam. She said: I will see what my sisters do, then I will be one of them. Tulayb said: I ask you by Allah to go to him, greet him with salam, affirm his truthfulness, and bear witness that there is no god but Allah. Arwa said: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Thereafter she used to support the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with her tongue, and would urge her son to help him (peace and blessings be upon him) and to carry out his commands.
This hadith is sahih gharib on the condition of Imam Bukhari, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Correction of the text: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this word is written "salaha", and in manuscript (Z) a "dabbah" (a mark indicating doubt or error) is placed above it. It is actually a distortion of the word "bi-lisaniha" (with her tongue). For when Ibn Sa'd (3/114) reported this narration, it has the words "bi-lisaniha", and several scholars have reported it from Ibn Sa'd in the same way. In manuscripts (S), (M) and ('A), this place had been left blank.

Grading: Its chain is "weak" on account of the weakness of "Musa bin Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin al-Harith al-Taymi", and "Ishaq bin Muhammad al-Farwi" is also "layyin al-hadith" (a soft, weak narrator).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi corroborated it (see: Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" 3/114 and 10/42), with the difference that al-Waqidi did not mention Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman in his chain, but rather made it a "mursal" narration of Muhammad bin Ibrahim al-Taymi.
Details of the narration: The author (al-Hakim) will later mention, at hadith numbers (7041) and (7053), the conversion to Islam of Arwa bint Abd al-Muttalib on the authority of Abu Abd Allah al-Waqidi, and will narrate from him with a chain a report indicating it (her Islam); so it should be consulted.
