It is narrated from Sayyiduna Rifa'ah bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): On the day of Badr we set out (towards the battlefield), and we could not find the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (among us). So all the companions began calling out to one another: Is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with you? All the people stopped there until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, and with him was Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). The people said: O Messenger of Allah! We had lost you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Abu al-Hasan (Ali) had a cramp (pain) in his stomach, so I stayed behind because of him."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "weak" on account of the weakness of "Abu Ma'shar". Abu Ma'shar's name is Najih bin Abd al-Rahman al-Sindi. Criticism and praise of narrators: And the narrator who narrates from him (Abu Ma'shar) is 'Asim bin 'Ali bin 'Asim al-Wasiti, whose narrations contain "manakir" (munkar narrations). Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (4548), Abu Bakr al-Anbari in his "Hadith" (58), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Tibb al-Nabawi" (385) and "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (2715), and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "Tarikh Baghdad" (2/372), by various routes from 'Asim bin 'Ali with this same chain. Caution / Arrangement of the text: In our manuscripts this hadith and the one before it had come before the biography (heading) of "Rifa'ah bin Rafi'", as a result of which they had become part of the biography of "Rafi' bin Malik", whereas the proper place of both is where we have now (corrected and) recorded them.
