Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4999

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ja'far bin Abi Talib was shown to me in the form of an angel, flying with the angels by means of two wings."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This hadith is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is "hasan" as corroboration and supporting evidence because of 'Abdullah bin Ja'far al-Madini, for although he is weak, his hadith is written down, as Abu Hatim and Ibn 'Adi said. We say: especially since his son, Imam 'Ali (bin al-Madini), narrated this hadith from him, and he has been corroborated. Moreover, this hadith has other similar routes from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), which will come with the author under number (5008); their narrators are "thiqah", though there is disagreement over whether they are connected or broken, as will be explained in its place. Nevertheless, by the combination of all these routes, together with the supporting reports, the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) can be graded sahih, Allah willing.
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (3763) recorded it from 'Ali bin Hujr, from 'Abdullah bin Ja'far, with this same chain.
Grading: Al-Tirmidhi said: "This hadith is gharib as a hadith of Abu Hurayrah; we know it only from the narration of 'Abdullah bin Ja'far, and Yahya bin Ma'in and others declared him weak".
Technical note / Narrator identification: And 'Abdullah bin Ja'far is the father of 'Ali bin al-Madini.
Important point / Research: We say: others besides 'Abdullah bin Ja'far also narrated it. Ibn Hibban (7047) recorded it through the route of Yahya bin Nasr bin Hajib, from his father, from al-'Ala', likewise.
Grading: And its chain is "hasan" as corroboration and supporting evidence because of Yahya bin Nasr bin Hajib, since there is disagreement about him, and at the very least his hadith is written down; his father is slightly better than him.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Supporting reports for this hadith are the hadiths of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) under numbers (4951), (4997) and (5001); and see the hadith of al-Bara' bin 'Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) which has passed under number (4396).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Its meaning is authentically established from the hadith of 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), which has passed with the author under number (4400), that whenever he greeted 'Abdullah bin Ja'far he would say: "Al-salamu 'alayka ya Ibn Dhi al-Janahayn" (Peace be upon you, O son of the one with two wings).
Grading: And its chain is "sahih".
