Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) Its marfu' part is "hasan li-ghayrih" (hasan due to supporting evidence), although this chain contains Muhammad bin 'Umar (al-Waqidi), who is alone in this report in describing the manner of Ja'far's (may Allah be pleased with him) martyrdom on the day of Mu'tah. As for Ja'far's (may Allah be pleased with him) going to Abyssinia in the second emigration, that is disputed, as will be explained.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd recorded in "al-Tabaqat": 4/ 35 the story of Ja'far's (may Allah be pleased with him) martyrdom at Mu'tah from al-Waqidi, with this same chain. It is also in "Maghazi al-Waqidi": 2/ 761.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd, at 4/ 31, quoted the story of Ja'far's (may Allah be pleased with him) emigration to Abyssinia and then to Madinah, without the marfu' part, from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi as "his own statement", without giving a chain for it!
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated this report in "Dhayl al-Mudhayyal" [as cited in the Muntakhab of 'Arib bin Sa'd al-Qurtubi: 11/ 494] in full (but without the marfu' part) from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi > 'Abdullah bin Muhammad bin 'Umar bin 'Ali > his father.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report (shahid) for its marfu' part is the hadith of Jabir bin 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) which has passed under number (4295); its narrators are "la ba'sa bihim", but the correct view is that it is narrated from al-Sha'bi as "mursal". However, it has another "connected supporting report" with a hasan chain, which we mentioned there.
Important point / Research: Al-Waqidi's statement that Ja'far bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) went in the second emigration to Abyssinia was agreed with by a group, among them: Musa bin 'Uqbah [Dala'il al-Nubuwwah of al-Bayhaqi: 2/ 285-293], 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr [in the narration of Abu al-Aswad, the orphan of 'Urwah, al-Tabarani's al-Kabir: (8316)], Ibn Sa'd [al-Tabaqat: 6/ 462], al-Baladhuri [Ansab al-Ashraf: 1/ 198], al-Bayhaqi [Dala'il al-Nubuwwah: 2/ 297-370], Ibn al-Jawzi [al-Muntazam: 3/ 346], Ibn Sayyid al-Nas ['Uyun al-Athar: 1/ 136], and Ibn Ishaq [al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah in the narration of Yunus bin Bukayr: (302)].
Important point / Research: Others, however, went against them and stated with certainty (jazm) that Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) emigrated in "the first emigration to Abyssinia". Among them are: Abu Bakr bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin al-Harith, 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr and Sa'id bin al-Musayyib [al-Zuhri narrated from all of them, as cited in al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh al-Awsat": 1/ 233 and 238; al-Tahawi's "Ahkam al-Qur'an": (410); Ibn 'Abd al-Barr's "al-Durar": p. 131; and Ibn 'Asakir: 16/ 72]. Al-Zuhri also agreed with them in 'Abd al-Razzaq's "al-Musannaf": (9743).
Details of the narration: Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) described the manner of Ja'far's (may Allah be pleased with him) martyrdom at Mu'tah in a context different from this one, as in al-Bukhari (4260), that he stood over the body of Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "I counted fifty wounds on his body from spears and swords, none of which was on his back". This narration will come shortly under number (5010) in abridged form, with the words "more than seventy" (bid'an wa sab'in).
