Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This hadith is "sahih", and the narrators of this chain are "la ba'sa bihim" (acceptable),
Technical note / Defect ('illah): but there is disagreement over it on Mu'adh bin Rifa'ah, who is Ibn Rafi' al-Zuraqi. It was narrated from him by Yazid bin 'Abdullah bin Usamah al-Laythi and Yahya bin Sa'id (al-Ansari), and there is then disagreement on both of them as well:
Technical note / Defect ('illah) (Ibn al-Had): As for Ibn al-Had (Yazid), there is disagreement on him regarding the text of the hadith; most of his students made it "the statement of Jibril", not the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Muhammad bin 'Amr (Ibn 'Alqamah al-Laythi) went against all of them: he conflated the narration of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari with the narration of Ibn al-Had, whereas Yahya bin Sa'id narrated it from Mu'adh bin Rifa'ah as "mursal", as will come. He also differed in the text of the hadith and made it the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rather than of Jibril, as occurs in this narration of the author.
Technical note: However, there is no disagreement on Yazid bin al-Had that this hadith is from the narration of Mu'adh bin Rifa'ah from Jabir bin 'Abdullah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah) (Yahya bin Sa'id): As for Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari, Muhammad bin 'Amr bin 'Alqamah is alone in narrating this hadith from him as "mawsul" (connected), mentioning Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him). The "two Hammads" (Hammad bin Zayd and Hammad bin Salamah) went against him [as al-Khatib said in "al-Fasl li al-Wasl": 1/ 419]; both of them narrated it from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari from Mu'adh bin Rifa'ah as "mursal", without mentioning Jabir. Al-Daraqutni said in "al-'Ilal": (3280): "This is what is preserved from Yahya bin Sa'id", meaning the mursal form. Furthermore, Muhammad bin Ishaq also narrated this hadith from Mu'adh bin Rifa'ah and made it the statement of Jibril rather than of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but he went against Yazid bin al-Had and Yahya bin Sa'id, since he narrated it from Mu'adh bin Rifa'ah from "some men of his people".
Reference / Source: It is recorded in Musnad Ahmad: 22/ (14505) from Muhammad bin Bishr, and by al-Nasa'i (8167) through the route of al-Fadl bin Musa; both from Muhammad bin 'Amr bin 'Alqamah, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: This report is in Ibn Ishaq's "al-Sirah" [as cited in Sirat Ibn Hisham: 2/ 250-251]; he said: "Mu'adh bin Rifa'ah al-Zuraqi narrated to me; he said: Several men of my people (whomever I wish to name) narrated to me that Jibril came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)..." and then he mentioned the report.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This report is also narrated as a statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), in what 'Abdullah bin 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated in al-Nasa'i (2193) and elsewhere. Its narrators are "thiqah", although there is disagreement over whether it is mawsul or mursal.
Grading: The mention of "the shaking of the Throne" alone as the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) statement is authentically established through other routes from Jabir bin 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him). It is recorded in Ahmad: 22/ (14153) and 23/ (14768), Muslim (2466), al-Tirmidhi (3848) and Ibn Hibban (7029) through the route of Abu al-Zubayr Muhammad bin Muslim bin Tadrus al-Makki from Jabir bin 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said (while the bier of Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) was before them): "The Throne of the Most Merciful shook for it".
Details of the narration: It was also narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) by Abu Salih al-Samman and Abu Sufyan, as will come under number (4992).
