Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4979

Yahya bin Abbad bin Abdullah narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) speak at the time of the martyrdom of Hanzalah bin Abi Amir, when he and Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith had confronted each other and Shaddad bin al-Aswad had struck him with a sword and martyred him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The angels are washing your companion, so ask his wife (about the reason)." She told them that when he heard the call to battle, he set out while still in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah), (without having bathed). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is why the angels washed him."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (2) Manuscripts (S), (M) and ('A) have "fa-sa'alu" (so they asked); thus this and the wording after it do not become the speech of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Grading: (3) This hadith is "sahih", and this chain is "hasan" because of Muhammad bin Ishaq. The Companion of the hadith here is al-Zubayr bin al-'Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him), as al-Hafiz said in "al-Talkhis al-Habir": 2/ 118, because he was the one who could hear the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in that situation.
Technical note / Research: We say: 'Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) was three years old on the day of Uhud, so the hadith must be his father's (al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him)), who was present at Uhud. This is what is correct, contrary to al-Bayhaqi, who asserted with certainty in "al-Sunan al-Kubra": 4/ 105 that it is mursal; after narrating it through the author's chain, he omitted the opening words "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say", treated it as from the Musnad of 'Abdullah bin al-Zubayr, and declared it a "Companion's mursal". Ibn Ishaq also has another chain, which will come later, and there is a third chain through others whose narrators are trustworthy, so the report is sahih in any case. Ibn Hibban (7025) recorded it from Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Sarraj, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym recorded it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah": (418) and "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah": (2225) from Abu Hamid Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Jabalah, from Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Sarraj, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Ishaq recorded it in "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" (in the narration of Muhammad bin Salamah al-Harrani, printed after the narration of Yunus bin Bukayr: 515), and through his route Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah": 1/ 357 and Abu al-Qasim al-Asbahani in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah": (109); he said: "'Asim bin 'Umar bin Qatadah narrated to me from Mahmud bin Labid".
Technical note: Mahmud bin Labid had ru'yah (the honour of having seen the Prophet as a Companion), so this is a "Companion's mursal", which is hasan.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Sunan al-Kubra": 4/ 15 and "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah": 3/ 246, and Ibn al-Athir in "Usd al-Ghabah": 1/ 543, through the route of Yunus bin Bukayr > Ibn Ishaq > 'Asim bin 'Umar bin Qatadah, as "mursal" (Mahmud bin Labid is not in it).
Technical note: The (previous) narration of Muhammad bin Salamah al-Harrani shows that 'Asim bin 'Umar took it from Mahmud bin Labid.
Reference / Source: Ibn Bashkuwal recorded it in "Ghawamid al-Asma' al-Mubhamah": p. 591 from Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father, as "mursal".
Grading: And its narrators are trustworthy.
Details of the narration: The hadith of Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) will come under number (7153): "The two tribes of the Ansar, al-Aws and al-Khazraj, boasted to each other. Al-Aws said: Among us is the one at whose death the Throne of the Most Merciful shook (Sa'd bin Mu'adh), and the one who was protected by hornets (al-dabr) ('Asim bin Thabit), and the one whom the angels washed (Hanzalah bin al-Rahib)..."
Grading: And its chain is "qawi" (strong).
