Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4971

Imam Muhammad bin Umar narrates from his shaykhs (the summary of which is this): Abdullah bin Amr bin Haram, whose kunyah was Abu Jabir, was the father of Jabir bin Abdullah al-Salami al-Ansari. He was one of the chiefs (nuqaba') who gave the pledge on the Night of Aqabah, and he was the first Muslim to be martyred on the day of Uhud. He was martyred by Sufyan bin Abd Shams Abu al-A'war al-Sulami, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led his funeral prayer (during the battle) before the rout.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Reference / Source: (2) This report is in "al-Maghazi" of Muhammad bin 'Umar (al-Waqidi), 1/ 266; he opened it by saying: Jabir said: "My father was the first to be killed", and then mentioned the report.
Technical note: Al-Waqidi is alone in narrating this portion; see what will come under number (4975).
Details of the narration: Ka'b bin Malik narrated the story of 'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Haram's acceptance of Islam, his presence at al-'Aqabah and his being one of the nuqaba' (chiefs); Ibn Ishaq recorded it ["Sirat Ibn Hisham": 1/ 440-441], and through his route Ahmad recorded it in 25/ (15798) and others, with a "hasan chain".
Details of the narration: Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrated his own presence at al-'Aqabah, and that of his father and his two maternal uncles, as in Sahih al-Bukhari (3890) and (3891).
Details of the narration: Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrated his father's martyrdom on the day of Uhud, as will come right after this and under numbers (4974) and (4975); this has also been narrated from others.
Important point / Research: There is disagreement about who killed the father of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) on the day of Uhud; it was said that Abu al-A'war Sufyan bin 'Abd Shams killed him, and it was also said that Usamah al-A'war bin 'Ubayd killed him.
