Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4969

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Nothing prevented us from taking part in the Battle of Badr except that my father and I were coming along when the disbelievers of Quraysh seized us. They asked: "Do you intend to go to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)?" We said: "No, we have no such intention; we only want to go to Madinah." So they took from us a firm covenant and pledge by Allah that we would go only to Madinah and would not fight (against them) alongside Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). When we had got away from them, we came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him everything they had said and what we had replied. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We seek Allah's help against them, and we will fulfil their covenant." So we went to Madinah, and this is what prevented us from taking part in Badr.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) This hadith is "sahih", and this chain is "hasan" on account of Ahmad bin Mihran al-Asbahani, and he has been corroborated.
Reference / Source: It was narrated in Musnad Ahmad: 38/(23354) and Sahih Muslim: (1787) via Abu Usamah Hammad bin Usamah, from al-Walid bin 'Abd Allah bin Jumay'.
Important point: So al-Hakim's including it as a supplement (istidrak) is an oversight (dhuhul) on his part.
Details of the narration: This narration will come with the author at no. (5721) via Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from Mus'ab bin Sa'd, that: "The polytheists seized Hudhayfah and his father before Badr …", and then he mentioned it similarly.
Grading: And its narrators are "thiqah".

Note / Clarification: (3) In our manuscripts this word was distorted into "'awra'", whereas it comes correctly in "the Mahmudiyyah manuscript".

Note / Clarification: (1) This addition is taken from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak". This word is established in the narration of Yunus bin Bukayr from Ibn Ishaq ["Usd al-Ghabah": 1/493], the narration of Ziyad al-Bakka'i ["Sirat Ibn Hisham": 2/87], the narration of Salamah bin al-Fadl ["Tarikh al-Tabari": 2/530] and the narration of Muhammad bin Salamah ["Ma'rifat al-Sahabah": (2298)].
Technical note / Lexicon: "Al-zim'" is the interval between two drinkings or two visits to the watering place; it is a figure of speech for something very small. The donkey is specifically mentioned because, among animals, it is the least able to endure without water.

Note / Clarification: (2) Our manuscripts have "hamat al-qawm", whereas the text we have established from "Talkhis al-Mustadrak" agrees with the other narrations from Ibn Ishaq and with the meaning of the context. "Hamat al-yawm" means that he is on the brink of death. Its origin is the pre-Islamic (Jahiliyyah) saying that when someone dies, a bird called the "hamah" comes out of his head. "Hamat al-qawm" makes no sense here, because it means "the chief of the people".
