Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4939

Ibn Ishaq says: A man from the tribe of Aslam, who retained well what he heard, told me that Abu Jahl confronted the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at al-Safa, harmed him, abused him, and said harsh words finding fault with his religion. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him no reply. A slave woman of Abdullah bin Jud'an al-Taymi was listening to all this from her dwelling above al-Safa. Then Abu Jahl went from there and sat in the gathering of Quraysh near the Ka'bah. Shortly afterwards, Sayyiduna Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib came back from hunting with his bow slung over him. It was his habit that whenever he returned from hunting, he would stop at the gathering of Quraysh, greet them and talk with them. He was the most honoured and the most formidable man of Quraysh, and at that time he was still upon the religion of his people. When he passed by the slave woman, she said: "O Abu Umarah, if only you had seen what your nephew Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) suffered just a little while ago from Abu al-Hakam (Abu Jahl)! He found him here, harmed him, abused him and said hateful things, and then left, while Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him no reply." Hearing this, Hamzah was filled with anger, because of the honour Allah willed for him. He went out quickly without stopping for anyone, intending to perform tawaf of the House and heading deliberately for Abu Jahl to attack him. When he entered al-Masjid al-Haram and saw him sitting among the people, he advanced towards him until he stood over his head, and he struck him a heavy blow on his head with his bow. Men of the tribe of Banu Makhzum stood up to help Abu Jahl and said: "O Hamzah, it seems to us that you too have become a Sabi' (a Muslim)?" Hamzah said: "What can stop me from it, when its truth has become clear to me? I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah and that what he says is the truth. By Allah, I will not turn back from it; stop me if you are truthful." Abu Jahl said: "Leave Abu Umarah alone, for I did abuse his nephew very badly." So Hamzah remained firm upon his Islam and followed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When Hamzah accepted Islam, Quraysh realised that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had now gained strength and that Hamzah would defend him, so they held back from some of the harm they used to inflict on him. Hamzah composed some verses about this when he struck Abu Jahl; (the narrator) mentioned a rajaz poem that is not reliably preserved, which begins: "Taste, O Abu Jahl, the consequence of what you did." Then Hamzah returned home, and Shaytan came to him and whispered: "You, the chief of Quraysh, have followed this Sabi' and abandoned the religion of your forefathers? Death is better for you than this." So Hamzah became troubled and prayed: "O Allah, if this is right guidance, then place its affirmation in my heart; otherwise, make a way out for me from the confusion I have fallen into." He spent that night in severe whisperings, until when morning came, he went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O my nephew, I have fallen into a confusion from which I do not know the way out. It is very hard for a man like me to remain in a state in which he does not know whether he is upon guidance or error, so speak to me." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to him, admonished him, made him fear Allah and gave him glad tidings. Then Allah placed faith in his heart, and he said: "I bear witness that you are truthful; I bear a witness of truth and of knowledge. O my nephew, now proclaim your religion openly. By Allah, I would not like to have all that the sky shades while remaining upon my former religion." So Hamzah was among those through whom Allah honoured the religion.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In our manuscripts this word is "ja'ala" (with jim in place of fa'), whereas we have kept (fa'ala) according to the printed edition, which agrees with "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" (narration of Yunus bin Bukayr from Ibn Ishaq: 212), and this also agrees with all the other narrations from Ibn Ishaq.

Note / Clarification: (1) Manuscripts (Z) and (B) add the word "yukhaffif", whose meaning is not clear to us; it is not in manuscripts (S) and (M), nor does it occur in any of the narrations from Ibn Ishaq, so in our view it is better to delete it.

Note / Clarification: (2) In the manuscripts this name was distorted into "Sa'd", although there is no mention of Sa'd in this report; the one who said this was Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) himself, as in "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" (narration of Yunus bin Bukayr) and al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah": 2/213 (from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim).

Note / Clarification: (3) In manuscripts (S) and (M) and the printed edition of "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" (narration of Yunus bin Bukayr) this word is "'asayt" (with undotted 'ayn and sin).

Technical note / Lexicon: (4) "Al-bathth" means the most intense grief; it is so called because the one afflicted by it cannot bear it until he discloses (spreads) it.

Note / Clarification: (5) This text had dropped out of our manuscripts, and we have established (inserted) it from "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" and from al-Bayhaqi's narration in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah": 12/213-21 from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.

Note / Clarification: (1) In our manuscripts this phrase was distorted into "wa-shahadat al-musaddiq".

Note / Clarification: (2) Manuscript (Z) has "alma'at al-shams", whereas the text recorded here (atla'at) is correct according to the narration of al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah": 2/214.
Reference / Source: And in "al-Sirah" (narration of Yunus bin Bukayr from Ibn Ishaq: 213) the words are "azallathu al-sama'" (the sky shaded him).

Grading: (3) Its chain is weak because the "man from Aslam" is unnamed, and in addition this chain is "mu'dal" (with two or more consecutive narrators missing).
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah": 2/213-214 from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: This narration is also in "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" (narration of Yunus bin Bukayr: 212 and 213).
Reference / Source: It is also in "Sirat Ibn Hisham": 1/291-292 through Ziyad bin 'Abd Allah al-Bakka'i, from Muhammad bin Ishaq, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated it in "Tarikh al-Umam wa al-Muluk": 2/333-334 via Salamah bin al-Fadl, and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah": (1808) via Ibrahim bin Sa'd, both from Muhammad bin Ishaq.
Details of the narration: However, neither of them mentioned the story of Satan coming to Hamzah and trying to turn him away from Islam, to the end of the story.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir": (2926) via Jarir bin Hazim, from Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Ya'qub bin 'Utbah bin al-Mughirah bin al-Akhnas bin Shariq al-Thaqafi, "mu'dal", without the story of Satan coming to Hamzah.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in brief in "al-Tabaqat": 3/8 via 'Ubayd Allah bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd Allah bin Mawhab, and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir": (2925) via Usamah bin Zayd al-Laythi, both from Muhammad bin Ka'b al-Qurazi, likewise "mursal", and it too lacks the story of Satan coming to Hamzah.

Grading: (4) Its chain is "da'if" because Sa'id bin Muhammad al-Hajwani is weak; al-Daraqutni declared him weak, as the author (al-Hakim) himself reported from al-Daraqutni in his book "al-Su'alat".
Note / Clarification: We have not found this narration with anyone other than the author (al-Hakim).
