(2). It is narrated from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Rijal that As'ad bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with him) died in the month of Shawwal, at the beginning of the ninth month after the Hijrah. At that time the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was being built, and this was before the Battle of Badr. The Banu al-Najjar came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Our Naqib (chief) has passed away, so appoint a Naqib for us." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am your Naqib."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In our manuscripts this phrase is written "at the start of nineteen (19) months", which is a clear error. Only manuscript (B) has "nine (9) months". What is correct is what we have established in the text (that is, nine months), as transmitted from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi in "Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd" (3/565). Important point: The evidence for this is that the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) Mosque was built at this time in the first year of the Hijrah, not in the second year as the erroneous wording "nineteen months" would require. Furthermore, if what is in the manuscripts (19 months) were accepted as correct, the death of As'ad bin Zurarah would fall after the Battle of Badr, not before it, because the author's statement "in Shawwal" together with "nineteen months" requires that the death be after Badr, whereas it is a known fact that the Battle of Badr took place in Ramadan of the second year. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This is further supported by the fact that Sa'id bin al-Musayyab, Malik bin Anas, Qatadah and al-Zuhri mentioned that Badr took place "eighteen months" after the Hijrah (see al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 3/106 and 126). The statement of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab was narrated with a chain by Malik in "al-Muwatta'" (1/196). This is also the view of Ibn Ishaq (Tarikh Ibn Abi Khaythamah: 1436). Muhammad bin Habib stated it decisively in "al-Muhabbar" (p. 10), as did Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (after no. 748) and al-Baghawi in "Sharh al-Sunnah" (13/376-377). There are other views on the date of Badr, but the one mentioned is the most reliable (thabt).
Reference / Source: This narration is in "Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd" (3/611) from Muhammad bin 'Umar (al-Waqidi). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Waqidi is not alone in this; rather, Ibn Ishaq narrated something similar in "al-Sirah" (Sirat Ibn Hisham 1/507-508) from 'Asim bin 'Umar bin Qatadah al-Ansari "mursal", but without mention of the date of As'ad bin Zurarah's death.
