Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4902

It is narrated from Afif bin Amr; he said: I was a merchant, and in the period of Jahiliyyah I was a friend of Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib. I came for trade and stayed with Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib at Mina. (There I saw that) a man came, and when the sun had passed its zenith he stood up and began to pray. Then a woman came, and she too stood and began to pray. Then a boy who was close to puberty came, and he too stood and began to pray. I asked Abbas: "Who is this?" He said: "This is Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abd al-Muttalib, my nephew. He claims that he is a Prophet, and no one has followed him in this matter except this woman and this boy. This woman is Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, his wife, and this boy is his cousin, Ali bin Abi Talib." Afif bin Amr (after he had accepted Islam and his Islam had become excellent) used to say: "I wish I had accepted Islam that day; then I would have been a quarter of Islam (the fourth Muslim)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, and the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Correction of the chain: In "al-Mustadrak" and in al-Dhahabi's "al-Talkhis" the chain appears as: "Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Isma'il bin 'Amr bin 'Afif, from his grandfather 'Afif bin 'Amr". Here the name of Isma'il's father, "Iyas", was changed to "'Amr", and the name of Isma'il's father dropped out of the chain, so that the narration became Isma'il's directly from his grandfather. The name "Yahya bin Abi al-Ash'ath" also dropped out. The same error is in Ibn Hajar's "Ithaf al-Maharah" (13849) and in al-Zayla'i's "Nasb al-Rayah" (3/459), which shows that it is an old error, perhaps originating with al-Hakim himself. In any case, correcting it was necessary. It has been corrected from "Musnad Ahmad" (3/1787) and from other sources that cited it by way of Zuhayr bin Harb, such as "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" of Ahmad bin Zuhayr (3/388), al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (18/1811) and al-'Uqayli's "al-Du'afa' al-Kabir" (95). Other trustworthy hafiz narrators also narrated it from Ya'qub bin Ibrahim bin Sa'd, and Yunus bin Bukayr also narrated it from Muhammad bin Ishaq. So what we have established is certainly correct.
