Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading of the chain: This chain is "hasan" because of 'Ali bin Qadim; he is "saduq" and "hasan al-hadith". He was corroborated on the statement of 'Ali bin al-Husayn, but he was contradicted in narrating the marfu' hadith in "connected" form, because a group narrated it from Yahya bin Sa'id (al-Ansari), from 'Ali bin al-Husayn in "mursal" form. Likewise Muhammad bin 'Ali al-Baqir also narrated it from 'Ali bin al-Husayn in "mursal" form. Even so, it has "sahih supporting reports".
Reference: Al-Dulabi narrated it in "al-Dhurriyyah al-Tahirah" (159) and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (2889) by way of Ahmad bin Yahya al-Sufi, from 'Ali bin Qadim, with this chain.
Reference (mawquf): The statement of 'Ali bin al-Husayn (without the marfu' part) was narrated by Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (7/ 212), Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj in his "Hadith" (173), Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Sunnah" (996), Abu Bakr al-Khallal in "al-Sunnah" (798), al-Lalaka'i in "Sharh Usul al-I'tiqad" (2682, 2683), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (3/ 136) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (41/ 374, 391, 392) through various routes from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari, from 'Ali bin al-Husayn.
Addition in the text: Some of them added in it: "Your (excessive) love has not stopped pursuing us until it has become a disgrace upon us." Some said: "a blemish (shayn)". And some added instead: "By Allah! What you say has kept following us until you have made us hated by the people."
Reference (marfu'): The marfu' part alone was narrated by al-Mu'afa bin 'Imran al-Mawsili in "al-Zuhd" (100) from Abu Shihab 'Abd Rabbih bin Nafi' al-Hannat; Hannad bin al-Sari in "al-Zuhd" (797) from Abu Mu'awiyah Muhammad bin Khazim al-Darir; al-Harith bin Abi Usamah in his "Musnad" (as in "Bughyat al-Bahith" 952) by way of Sufyan al-Thawri; Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i in "al-Ghaylaniyyat" (51), and through his route Ibn 'Asakir (4/ 76), by way of Hafs bin Ghiyath; and Ibn 'Asakir (4/ 76) by way of Marwan bin Mu'awiyah al-Fazari. All five of these narrators narrate it from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari, from 'Ali bin al-Husayn in "mursal" form. Ibn 'Asakir said: "These are mursal reports with good chains (hadhihi marasil hasanat al-isnad)."
Reference / Source: Al-Husayn bin al-Hasan al-Marwazi narrated it in his additions to Ibn al-Mubarak's "al-Zuhd" (984), and through his route Ibn 'Asakir (4/ 76), by way of Ja'far bin Muhammad bin 'Ali, from his father, from 'Ali bin al-Husayn in "mursal" form. He said: It was said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): What if we made something raised for you, on which you could stand to address the people? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will remain among you, with you treading on my heels, until Allah raises me." Then he said: "Do not raise me above my due, for Allah the Exalted took me as a servant ('abd) before He took me as a Messenger." Ibn 'Asakir declared its chain "hasan" as a mursal report!
Supporting reports (Anas): It is supported by the hadith of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), which is in Ahmad (20/ 12551), al-Nasa'i (10006, 10007) and elsewhere with a "sahih chain": A man said: O Muhammad! O our master and son of our master! O best of us and son of the best of us! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people, hold to your taqwa, and do not let Satan lead you astray. I am Muhammad bin 'Abdullah, the servant of Allah and His Messenger. By Allah, I do not like you to raise me above the rank in which Allah has placed me."
Supporting reports ('Umar): It is also supported by the hadith of 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), which is in Ahmad (1/ 154), al-Bukhari (3445) and Ibn Hibban (413), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not exaggerate in praising me as the Christians exaggerated about 'Isa son of Maryam; I am only the servant of Allah and His Messenger."
