Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4868

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hasan (al-Basri) that Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to face Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) with armies like mountains. Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, I see armies that will not turn their backs until they kill their opponents. Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the better of the two men, said: If these kill one another, who will bear for me the responsibility for their blood (and its retribution), their affairs, and the care of their widowed women? The narrator said: Then Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Abd al-Rahman bin Samurah bin Habib bin Abd Shams (may Allah be pleased with him) (Sufyan said: he was a Companion). So Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) made peace with Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), handed authority over to him, and pledged allegiance to him for the caliphate on certain conditions and covenants. And Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) a huge sum, said to be five hundred million dirhams. This took place in Jumada al-Ula 41 AH, and the period of Sayyiduna Hasan's (may Allah be pleased with him) caliphate until he handed it over to Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) was seven months and eleven days.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Manuscript variants: This text has been adopted from (M) and ('A), while in the remaining manuscripts the wording is garbled.

Grading of the chain: This chain is "sahih". Al-Humaydi is "'Abdullah bin al-Zubayr bin 'Isa al-Asadi", Sufyan is "Ibn 'Uyaynah", Abu Musa is "Isra'il bin Musa", and al-Hasan is "Ibn Abi al-Hasan al-Basri".
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari narrated it in (2704) from 'Abdullah bin Muhammad al-Musnadi and in (7109) from 'Ali bin 'Abdullah al-Madini; both of them narrate it from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, with this chain.
Addition: Both of them added that Mu'awiyah sent another man, "'Abdullah bin 'Amir bin Kurayz", along with 'Abd al-Rahman bin Samurah. However, they did not mention in it the huge sum of money that Mu'awiyah gave to al-Hasan, nor the length of the caliphate of al-Hasan bin 'Ali.
Technical note / Error (wahm): The statement "It is said: five hundred thousand thousand (i.e. 500 million) dirhams" appears like this in the manuscripts of "al-Mustadrak", and in manuscript (Z) a "dabbah" (a doubt mark) has been placed over the second "alf" (thousand). It appears that the mention of the second "alf" is an error (wahm). For 'Abdullah bin Buraydah narrated with a strong chain, in Ibn Abi Shaybah (11/ 94) and in Abu 'Arubah al-Harrani's "al-Awa'il" (168) and elsewhere, that Mu'awiyah said to al-Hasan bin 'Ali: "I will give you a gift such as I have not given anyone before you, nor will I give it to anyone of the Arabs after you," so he gave him four hundred thousand (400,000) dirhams, and he accepted it. This supports the view that the addition of the second "alf" is an error.
