حدثنا أبو عبد الله محمد بن عبد الله الزاهد الأصبهاني، حدثنا أحمد بن مهران، حدثنا عبيد الله بن موسى، أخبرنا كامل بن العلاء، عن أبي صالح، عن أبي هريرة، قال: كنا نصلي مع رسول الله ﷺ العشاء، فكان يُصلِّي فإذا سجد وَثَبَ الحَسَنُ والحسينُ على ظهره، وإذا رفع رأسه أخذهما فوضعهما وَضعًا رفيقًا، فإذا عاد عادَ عادا، فلما صلّى جعل واحدًا هاهنا وواحدًا هاهنا، فجئته، فقلتُ: يا رسول الله، ألا أذهبُ بهما إلى أُمّهما؟ قال: "لا" فَبَرَقَتْ بَرْقةٌ، فقال: "الْحَقا بأُمِّكُما"، فما زالا يَمْشِيان في ضَوْئها حتى دَخَلا (1).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We were praying the Isha prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Whenever he (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated, Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) would climb onto his back, and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head, he would take hold of them very gently and set them down. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) went into prostration again, they too would come back onto his back. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he seated one on one side of him and the other on the other side. I came forward and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), shall I take them back to their mother? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." Just then lightning flashed, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go to your mother." So they both kept walking in the light of that lightning until they entered the house.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(1) إسناده حسن من أجل كامل بن العلاء وأحمد بن مهران: وهو ابن خالد الأصبهاني. أبو صالح: هو ذكوان السمّان.
Grading of the chain: This chain is "hasan" because of Kamil bin al-'Ala' and Ahmad bin Mihran (who is Ibn Khalid al-Asbahani). Abu Salih is "Dhakwan al-Samman".
وأخرجه أحمد 16 / (106589) عن أسود بن عامر وأبي المنذر إسماعيل بن عمر، و (10660) عن أبي أحمد محمد بن عبد الله الزُّبَيري، ثلاثتهم عن كامل بن العلاء، به.
Source / References: Imam Ahmad narrated it in (16/ 10658, 10659) from Aswad bin 'Amir and Abu al-Mundhir Isma'il bin 'Umar, and in (10660) from Abu Ahmad Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah al-Zubayri. All three narrators narrate it from Kamil bin al-'Ala' with this same chain. (Note: the number 106589 in the Arabic text appears to be a scribal error; from the context these are 10658 and 10659.)
