Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4830

It is narrated from Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to her one day and asked: "Where are my two sons?" She replied: Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) has taken them. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out (in search of them) and found them playing in a water trough (or the watered part of a garden), with some leftover dates in front of them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali, will you not take my sons back before the heat (of the sun) grows intense?" And (the narrator) mentioned the rest of the hadith.
Muhammad bin Musa bin Mashmul al-Madani is trustworthy (thiqah); Awn and his father are also trustworthy; Umm Ja'far is the daughter of al-Qasim bin Muhammad bin Abi Bakr, and her grandmother is Asma bint Abi Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with them both); and all of these narrators are honourable and trustworthy.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan", as al-Mundhiri said in "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib" (4/ 105).
Technical note / Interpolation: However, in the author's (al-Hakim's) chain here an extra name has been inserted (ziyadah muqhamah), namely the mention of 'Awn bin Muhammad's father, "Muhammad bin 'Ali bin Abi Talib" (known as Ibn al-Hanafiyyah). For a group of the students of Muhammad bin Isma'il bin Abi Fudayk narrated this hadith and did not mention the father. Moreover, several other hadiths are narrated with this same chain in which Muhammad bin 'Ali bin Abi Talib is not mentioned; rather, 'Awn narrates directly from his mother Umm Ja'far. From this it is established that the mention of Muhammad Ibn al-Hanafiyyah here has been inserted (interpolated).
Technical note / Correction: The author (may Allah have mercy on him) made a clear mistake in identifying the narrators of this chain, from Muhammad bin Musa up to Asma'. (In fact) Muhammad bin Musa is "Muhammad bin Musa bin Abi 'Abd Allah al-Fitri". 'Awn's mother is "Umm Ja'far", the daughter of Muhammad bin Ja'far bin Abi Talib (who is also called Umm 'Awn). And Umm Ja'far's grandmother "Asma'" is Asma' bint 'Umays (the wife of Ja'far bin Abi Talib). Al-Dhahabi did not notice this point in his "al-Talkhis" (and he too missed it).
Source / References: This hadith was recorded by al-Dulabi in "al-Dhurriyyah al-Tahirah" (193) via Dirar bin Surad, al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (22/ 1040) via Ahmad bin Salih al-Misri, and the author (al-Hakim) in "Fada'il Fatimah" (220) via Ja'far bin Musafir. All three (Dirar, Ahmad and Ja'far) narrate it from Muhammad bin Isma'il bin Abi Fudayk with this same chain.
Technical note / Correction: In al-Tabarani's narration the name of Ibn Abi Fudayk's shaykh is given as "Musa bin Ya'qub", and this is the mistake of some narrator below Ahmad bin Salih al-Misri al-Hafiz; for Ahmad bin Salih narrated other hadiths with this same chain in which he gave the name of this man (the shaykh) correctly.
Lexical explanation: "al-sharabah" means the basin or hollow made at the base of a date palm (to hold water).

Critique: The author (al-Hakim) (may Allah have mercy on him) was not correct in identifying any one of these narrators he mentioned, as has already been explained.
