Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4829

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that when (Sayyidah) Fatimah gave birth to Hasan, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came and said: "Show me my son. What have you named him?" I said: I have named him "Harb." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather his name is Hasan." Then when Husayn was born, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came and said: "Show me, what have you named him?" I said: I have named him "Harb." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather his name is Husayn." Then when the third (son) was born, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came and said: "Show me my son. What have you named him?" I said: I have named him "Harb." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather his name is Muhassin." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have named them after the names of the sons of Harun (peace be upon him): Shabbar, Shabir and Mushabbir."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "munkar".
Defect ('illah): Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i is alone in narrating from the narrator Hani' bin Hani' (i.e. he is the only one to narrate from him). Imam al-Shafi'i and Ibn al-Madini called Hani' "majhul" (unknown), and Ibn Sa'd called him "munkar al-hadith". Despite this, Imam al-Nasa'i said: "laysa bihi ba's" (there is no harm in him). We say that al-Nasa'i's statement holds when he does not contradict anyone. But in this hadith he has contradicted the hadith of 'Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin 'Aqil, which he narrates from his father, from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) (and which will come later with the author under no. 7927). In it, 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) named al-Hasan "Hamzah" and al-Husayn "Ja'far", and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) changed them.
Important point: This other narration is closer to acceptance because it is the narration of his own household (Ahl al-Bayt), and they know their own hadith best, and Allah Most High knows best.
