حدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حدثنا إبراهيم بن مَرزُوق البصري بمِصر، حدثنا عبد الصمد بن عبد الوارث بن سعيد، حدثني أبي، حدثنا سعيد بن جُمْهانَ، عن سَفِينة أبي عبد الرحمن مولى النبي ﷺ، أن النبي ﷺ قال: "خلافةُ النبوة ثلاثون سنةً". قال سعيدٌ (1): أمسِك: أبو بكر سنتين، وعمر بن الخطاب عشرَ سنين، وعثمانُ بن عفّان اثنتي عشرة سنةً، وعليٌّ ستَّ سنين (2).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Safinah Abu Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The caliphate of Prophethood will last thirty years." Sa'id says: Count it up (the duration of the caliphates): the caliphate of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr was two years, that of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab ten years, that of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan twelve years, and the caliphate of Sayyiduna Ali comes to six years.

(1) كذلك جاء في النسخ الخطية: قال سعيد، مع أنَّ الذي في سائر روايات الخبر أنَّ الذي قال ذلك إنما هو سفينة مخاطبًا به سعيدًا، فإما أن يكون "سعيد": هنا تحريفًا عن "سفينة"، أو يكون أصله: قال سعيد: قال لي سفينة … فسقط ذكر سفينة سهوًا، وربما يكون سعيد قاله مخاطبًا به عبد الوارث، فكلُّ ذلك محتمل.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts it appears thus: "qala Sa'id" (Sa'id said), whereas in all the other narrations it is "Safinah" (may Allah be pleased with him) who says this, addressing Sa'id. It may be that the word "Sa'id" here is a distortion of "Safinah", or that the original wording was: "qala Sa'id: qala li Safinah..." (Sa'id said: Safinah said to me...) and the name of Safinah dropped out by oversight. It is also possible that Sa'id himself said this, addressing 'Abd al-Warith. All these possibilities exist.
(2) إسناده قوي من أجل سعيد بن جمهان، فهو صدوق لا بأس به، وقد صحَّح الإمام أحمد هذا الحديث واحتجَّ به في خلافة الأربعة الراشدين، فيما نقله عنه ابنُه عبد الله في "السنة" (1400)، والخلّال في "السنة" (610)، وحسَّنه الترمذي.
Grading: Its chain is "strong" (qawi) because of Sa'id bin Jumhan; he is saduq and there is no harm in him. Imam Ahmad graded this hadith "sahih" and used it as proof for the caliphate of the four Rightly Guided Caliphs (as his son 'Abd Allah reported in "al-Sunnah" 1400 and al-Khallal in "al-Sunnah" 610), and al-Tirmidhi graded it "hasan".
وأخرجه أبو داود (4646) عن سَوّار بن عبد الله بن سَوّار، عن عبد الوارث بن سعيد، بهذا الإسناد. وزاد في الحديث: "ثم يؤتي الله الملك - أو ملكه - من يشاء". وقال في آخره: قال سعيد: قال لي سفينة: أمسِك عليك ....
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (4646) recorded it from Sawwar bin 'Abd Allah bin Sawwar, from 'Abd al-Warith bin Sa'id, with this chain. He added in the hadith: "Then Allah will give the kingship (or His kingship) to whomever He wills." And at its end he said: "Sa'id said: Safinah said to me: Count..."
وأخرجه ابن حبان (6657) من طريق إبراهيم بن الحجاج الساميّ، عن عبد الوارث به، لكن بلفظ: "الخلافة ثلاثون سنة وسائرهم ملوك، والخلفاء والملوك اثنا عشر". ولم يذكر قول سفينة في آخره في ذكر سنيِّ خلافة الأربعة الراشدين. وانظر كلام ابن حبان بإثره.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (6657) narrated it via Ibrahim bin al-Hajjaj al-Sami, from 'Abd al-Warith, with this chain, but with the wording: "The caliphate will last thirty years and the rest of them will be kings, and the caliphs and kings are twelve (12)." He did not mention at its end the statement of Safinah counting the years of the Rightly Guided Caliphs. (See the words of Ibn Hibban after it.)
وقد تقدَّم هذا الحديث ضمن حديث آخر عند المصنف برقم (4487).
