It is narrated from Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty has commanded me to love four people from among my Companions, and He has informed me that He (Allah) also loves them." We said: O Messenger of Allah! Who are they? Each of us wished that we were among them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Behold! Ali is one of them." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) fell silent, and then said again: "Surely Ali is one of them."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is "weak". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Rabi'ah al-Iyadi ('Umar bin Rabi'ah) is alone in narrating it, and his hadith is accepted only in corroborations and supporting reports. Likewise the one narrating from him, Sharik (Ibn Abd Allah al-Nakha'i al-Qadi), had a poor memory. Nevertheless, al-Tirmidhi graded it "hasan", and Ibn Hajar graded it hasan in "al-Isabah" (6/ 203). Identification of the narrator: Ibn Buraydah is Abd Allah. Reference / Source: It is in "Musnad Ahmad" (38/ 22968) from Abd Allah bin Numayr, and (23014) from Aswad bin 'Amir. Details of the narration: In it the names of the other three are also given: Abu Dharr, Salman and al-Miqdad al-Kindi. Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (149) and al-Tirmidhi (3718) also recorded it through two routes from Sharik al-Nakha'i, with this chain. Al-Tirmidhi said: "A hasan gharib hadith."
