Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4657

It is narrated from Musa bin Uqbah that Alqamah bin Waqqas al-Laythi said: "When Talhah, al-Zubayr and Aishah (may Allah be pleased with them) set out to seek retribution for the blood of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was their spokeswoman and orator, and all of them were her followers. When they reached the place called Dhat Irq, they sent back Urwah bin al-Zubayr and Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman because of their young age." He says: "I saw Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) preferring a place where no one else was, with his beard pressed against his chest. I said to him: O Abu Muhammad! I see that you prefer solitude and have your beard resting on your chest (in worry). If you dislike this matter, then leave it; no one is forcing you into it. He said: O Alqamah bin Waqqas! Do not blame me. Yesterday we were one hand (united) against others, but today we have become two mountains of iron, each advancing upon the other."

Grading: (1) Its chain is "hasan", and al-Dhahabi in his "Talkhis" declared it "jayyid" under the author's route that will come (number 5694). This is on account of Abdullah bin Mus'ab (who is Ibn Thabit al-Zubayri). He was an emir of fine conduct, of great standing and high honour, praiseworthy in his governorship. Ibn Ma'in criticised him only because he did not have a written book (he did not write), and so he said: weak in hadith. We say: he based this on the fact that he had no book and narrated only from memory, and this alone is not something for which a narrator's narration is declared weak, unless it is established that he erred in his hadiths or was contradicted in them. So one like him is "hasan al-hadith" unless he errs or contradicts others. And he is of the same class as Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad, as Abu Hatim al-Razi said.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated it in his "Tarikh" (4/453 and 476) from Ahmad bin Mansur, from Yahya bin Ma'in, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Khaythamah narrated it in abridged form in the third part of his "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (2270), and through his route Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (40/247), from Yahya bin Ma'in - without the story of Alqamah bin Waqqas and Talhah bin Ubaydullah.
Reference / Source: As for the story of the people of the Camel considering Urwah and Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman too young, Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" (7/177), and Ibn Abi Khaythamah (2271) and Ibn Asakir (40/247), through the route of Abu Usamah Hammad bin Usamah, from Hisham bin Urwah, from his father.
Reference / Source: Likewise Hafs bin Ghiyath narrated it from Hisham bin Urwah, in Ibn Abi Khaythamah (2103) and in Abdullah bin Ahmad's additions to his father's "al-Ilal" (3629), mentioning Urwah alone.
Note / Clarification: "Al-zawr": the upper part of the chest, or the middle of the chest.
