(1). It is narrated from Sa'd bin Zayd bin Sa'd al-Ashhali that he presented the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with a sword from Najran as a gift. When he brought it to him (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave it to Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Fight with this in the path of Allah, but when the necks of the Muslims start clashing with one another (when they start fighting each other), strike it on a stone and break it, then stay secluded in your house, lying there like a rug that is spread out, until a sinful hand kills you or death comes to you."
Imam al-Hakim said: So it was for these reasons, and other proofs like them, that those people kept away from fighting alongside Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), while it was on the basis of the opposite reasons that those who took part in the war fought.

Explanation & Benefits

4/ 83. Grading: (1) Its chain is "hasan", Allah willing, on account of Sulayman bin Mahmud (who is Sulayman bin Muhammad bin Mahmud bin Muhammad bin Maslamah). Two narrators narrated from him and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". And with this same chain a number of the critics established that Sa'd bin Zayd bin Sa'd al-Ashhali was a Companion, among them Abu Hatim al-Razi, as his son reported from him in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (4/83). Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (4/48), Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" (1/282), Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (949), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (5424) and "al-Awsat" (2375), Abu Nu'aym al-Asbahani in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (3161), and Ibn Asakir (55/282) narrated it through several routes from Abdullah bin Abd al-Wahhab al-Hajabi with this same chain. Note / Clarification: And see the one before it. Note / Clarification: The statement "kun hilsan mulqan" means: stay in your house as a floor-mat stays (in the house), because the "hils" is a mat that is spread in the house.
Note / Clarification: (1) In manuscripts (Z) and (B): "qatalahu" (he killed him).
