Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4651

It is narrated from Khaythamah bin Abd al-Rahman that he said: I heard Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Malik (Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas, may Allah be pleased with him) say this when a man said to him that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says about you that you held back from supporting him. Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! It was an opinion that I formed, and that opinion of mine proved wrong. Indeed, Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) was granted three distinctions such that, had I been given even one of them, it would have been dearer to me than the world and all its blessings." (The first is that) on the day of Ghadir Khumm, after praising and extolling Allah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said concerning him: "Do you know that I have a greater claim over the believers than they have over themselves?" We said: Yes. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah! Whoever I am the mawla of, Ali is his mawla. O Allah! Befriend whoever befriends him, and be hostile to whoever is hostile to him." (The second is that) on the day of Khaybar he was brought while his eyes were sore and he could not see anything. He said: O Messenger of Allah! My eyes are sore. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) put his blessed saliva into his eyes and supplicated for him, and after that his eyes never became sore again until his martyrdom, and Khaybar was conquered at his hands. (The third is that) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered his uncle Sayyiduna Abbas and other people to leave the mosque (having their doors closed), and Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: (O Messenger of Allah!) You are sending us out although we are your close kin and your uncles, while you allow Ali to stay in the mosque? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not I who sent you out and settled him there; rather, it is Allah who commanded that you be sent out (of the mosque) and that he stay there." As for the matter of Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari and Abu Musa al-Ash'ari keeping aloof, the reality is that the Commander of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with him) sent his son Muhammad (bin al-Hanafiyyah) and Muhammad bin Abi Bakr to Kufah to take the pledge of allegiance. At that time Abu Musa al-Ash'ari and Abu Mas'ud were in Kufah, and Abu Musa refused to pledge allegiance. Then those two returned to the Commander of the Believers, so he sent his son Sayyiduna al-Hasan and Malik al-Ashtar.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is very weak because of Muslim al-Mula'i, since he is matruk (abandoned); but he is corroborated in the first and second stories of this report.
Reference / Source: Ibn Asakir narrated it in "Tarikh Dimashq" (42/118-119) through the route of Yahya bin Salamah bin Kuhayl from Muslim al-Mula'i, without the last story.
Reference / Source: The first story (that of Ghadir Khumm) was narrated by al-Nasa'i (8340, 8425, 8426) through the route of Musa bin Ya'qub al-Zam'i, and at (8427) through the route of Ya'qub bin Ja'far, both from Muhajir bin Mismar, from A'ishah bint Sa'd, from her father. In the second narration of Musa bin Ya'qub, her brother Amir bin Sa'd is also joined with A'ishah. And its chain is hasan.
Reference / Source: Only the marfu' part of the story was narrated by al-Nasa'i (8414) through the route of Ayman al-Habashi, that Sa'd said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever I am his mawla, Ali is his mawla." There is no harm in the narrators of this chain, but most probably Ayman did not meet Sa'd, and his narration from him is mursal.
Reference / Source: The marfu' part of the Ghadir Khumm story was also narrated by Ibn Majah (121) and al-Nasa'i (8343) through the route of Abd al-Rahman bin Sabit from Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas. The narrators are thiqah, but Ibn Ma'in stated with certainty that Ibn Sabit did not hear from Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas.
Note / Clarification: The story of Khaybar has already passed with the author (al-Hakim) at (4626) with a good (jayyid) chain from Amir bin Sa'd from his father; see its full takhrij there. The story of Ghadir Khumm is supported by the hadith of Zayd bin Arqam (4627, 4628); see its supporting reports there.
Reference / Source: The last story (the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sending the people out of the mosque except Ali) was narrated by al-Nasa'i (8371) through the route of Isra'il, from Abdullah bin Sharik, from al-Harith bin Malik, from Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas.
Grading: Its chain is weak because al-Harith bin Malik is unknown, and because of disagreement over it in both chain and text.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Nasa'i (8372) narrated through the route of Fitr bin Khalifah, from Abdullah bin Sharik, from Abdullah bin al-Ruqaym, from Sa'd: Al-Abbas came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: You have closed our doors except the door of Ali? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I neither opened them nor closed them." Fitr differed from Isra'il in naming the Tabi'i and in the text. And Abdullah bin al-Ruqaym is likewise not known.
Reference / Source: It is also narrated from Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas through another route in al-Tabarani ("al-Awsat": 3930), with a chain that has some weakness, in the wording of Fitr bin Khalifah (the closing of the doors). This is what is preserved (mahfuz) in the hadith of Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas. See the hadith of Ibn Abbas (4702).
Reference / Source: The statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the end of the report here (mentioning sending out and letting stay) is reported from Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas in another story, which al-Nasa'i (8096, 8370) and others narrated through the route of Muhammad bin Sulayman (Luwayn), from Sufyan bin Uyaynah, from Amr bin Dinar, from Abu Ja'far al-Baqir, from Ibrahim bin Sa'd, from his father (once he did not mention "from his father"), who said: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and some people were sitting with him. Ali came in, and when he came in they went out. When they went out they blamed one another and said: By Allah, he did not send us out and let him in. So they returned and came in, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, it was not I who let him in and sent you out; rather Allah let him in and sent you out."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Khatib (3/218) reported that Ahmad bin Hanbal rejected this hadith. Al-Khatib considered it most likely that he rejected it only as a connected report mentioning Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas, because the preserved narration is from Ibrahim bin Sa'd as a mursal report. Then al-Khatib narrated it through the routes of Abdullah bin Wahb and al-Humaydi, both from Sufyan bin Uyaynah, from Amr bin Dinar, from Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Ali, from Ibrahim bin Sa'd as a mursal report.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In Abu al-Shaykh (2/144) it comes as a connected report through the route of Muhammad bin Sulayman Luwayn, and Luwayn said: Ibn Uyaynah narrated it to us another time from Ibrahim bin Sa'd (as a mursal report). If this is correct, the disagreement is from Ibn Uyaynah, not from Luwayn. The narration of al-Nasa'i also points to this. In any case, the narrators are thiqah, and it is more authentic than the author's route.
