Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In the printed edition it is "hanin" (with ha'), but in manuscripts (Z) and (B) it is "khanin" (with kha'), which is a kind of weeping in which the sound comes out through the nose. Some consider "hanin" and "khanin" to be the same.
Grading: (2) This report is hasan, but with mention of al-Hasan bin Ali instead of al-Husayn (as in other narrations). In this narration the name appears as "Umar bin Qabisah", whereas the correct name is "Safwan bin Qabisah", as in the narration of Ja'far bin Ziyad al-Ahmar. Al-Bukhari, Ibn Abi Hatim and Ibn Hibban also recorded his name as Safwan. Most probably the error is from Sharik (Abdullah al-Nakha'i). Abdullah bin Salih al-Ijli, narrating from Sharik, called him "Amr bin Qabisah", which shows that Sharik did not retain the name accurately. Dirar bin Murrah also narrated from Safwan bin Qabisah, so together with Ibn Hibban's listing of him as trustworthy, his hadith has the potential to be graded hasan.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This report was also narrated from Umayy al-Sayrafi by Sufyan bin Uyaynah, but he did not name Safwan; rather he left him unnamed and described him as a man from Bajilah who was a foster brother of al-Qasri. This is Safwan himself, because other narrators called him "Ahmasi", and Ahmas is from Bajilah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Hibban's remark in "al-Thiqat", "if he heard from Tariq", is a doubt removed by the narration of Ibn Uyaynah, in which it is explicitly stated that he heard from Tariq bin Shihab.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Safwan bin Qabisah is not alone in this report; rather Qays bin Muslim al-Jadali (who is thiqah) corroborated him, but he did not mention Ali's statement "I turned this matter over, back and front...."; instead he mentioned something else in its place.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, there are supporting reports for Ali's statement in Safwan bin Qabisah's narration, as will come.
Reference / Source: Al-Baladhuri (3/33) narrated it through the route of Yahya bin Abd al-Hamid with this same chain.
Grading: Yahya (al-Himmani), although he has some weakness, is considered in corroborating chains and supporting reports.
Reference / Source: Abu al-Hasan al-Hammami narrated it in "Juz' al-I'tikaf" (36) through the route of Isma'il bin Musa al-Fazari, from Sharik al-Nakha'i, in abridged form, mentioning only Ali's statement that comes at the end of the report here.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (15/274), al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (4/309) and Umar bin Shabbah in "Tarikh al-Madinah" (4/1257) narrated it likewise through the route of Ja'far bin Ziyad from Umayy al-Sayrafi, and mentioned a lengthy story. Ja'far is "saduq" (truthful).
Reference / Source: Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah" (2/678-688) and Ibn Abi Khaythamah in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (3777) narrated it through the route of Sufyan bin Uyaynah, from Umayy al-Sayrafi, from a man of Bajilah (who was a foster brother of al-Qasri), from Tariq bin Shihab. In this narration the mention of Safwan bin Qabisah is left unnamed.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (15/99), Ibn Shabbah (4/1256), Ibn Abi Khaythamah (3775, 3776) and Ibn Asakir (42/456) narrated it through the route of Qays bin Muslim al-Jadali from Tariq bin Shihab. He related the story like the narration of Ja'far bin Ziyad from Umayy, but did not mention Ali's statement at the end of the report here (that he had to choose between fighting those people or disbelieving in what was revealed to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, this statement of Ali is supported by what Abu Nu'aym narrated in "Tathbit al-Imamah" (189) and Ibn Asakir (42/439) through the route of Yahya bin Hani', and what al-Bukhari narrated in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (1/36) and Ibn Asakir (42/473) through the route of Mazin bin Abdullah. Both their chains are criticised, but they are fit for corroboration. These narrations strengthen the narration of Safwan bin Qabisah and are strengthened by it. The narration of Ja'far bin Ziyad and that of Yahya bin Hani' explain Ali's reasoning in saying "disbelief in what was revealed to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)": it was because those who had pledged allegiance willingly then broke that pledge. We say: it is as though he was alluding to the saying of Allah the Exalted: "Then fight the one that transgresses until it returns to the command of Allah". This is a better interpretation than the view of Ibn Abd al-Barr ("al-Isti'ab": 535) that Ali meant verses such as "And strive for Allah with the striving due to Him".
Note / Clarification: His statement "I turned this matter over, back and front" means: I examined it thoroughly and considered how to manage it.
