It is narrated from Abu Rashid that when the news of the pledge of allegiance to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) reached Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "After him I will not pledge allegiance to anyone who is lower than him in rank or who has no standing."
Imam al-Hakim said: All these reports that have come concerning the pledge of allegiance to the Commander of the Believers are authentic and agreed upon. As for the claim of those who assert that Abdullah bin Umar, Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari, Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas, Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, Muhammad bin Maslamah al-Ansari and Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them) held back from pledging allegiance to him, this is the statement of those who deny the reality of the circumstances of that time. Now listen to the reality of it:

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is weak because Abu Rashid is unknown. The correct account is that Hudhayfah said this when he heard of the killing of Uthman, and he meant Uthman himself. Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri is Muhammad bin Abdullah bin al-Zubayr. Reference / Source: Ya'qub bin Sufyan (3/132) and al-Baladhuri (3/17) narrated it through two routes from al-Ala' bin Salih with this same chain. Reference / Source: Umar bin Shabbah (4/1249) and Abu Nu'aym (131) narrated through the route of Tariq bin Shihab that when Uthman was killed, Hudhayfah said: "You will not appoint a caliph after him except one who is 'as'ar' or 'abtar'; each later one will be worse." And its chain is sahih. Reference / Source: Ma'mar bin Rashid (20965) and Umar bin Shabbah (4/1249) narrated it from Qatadah as a mursal report. This mursal report supports the narration of Tariq bin Shihab. But Abu Nu'aym said: Hudhayfah's own statement is not a proof unless he attributes it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); it is his personal opinion, in which he may be mistaken or correct. Note / Clarification: "Al-asghar" (with ghayn) means the most abased, and "al-as'ar" (with 'ayn) means the one who turns away from the truth. Note / Clarification: "Al-abtar": deficient and of little good.
