Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4643

It is narrated from Shurahbil bin Sa'd al-Qurashi that Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) was made caliph in the year 35 AH, when he was fifty-eight years and some months old. When the Hajj season of 35 AH came, he sent Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) as leader of the Hajj in the years 35, 36, 37, 38 and 39 AH. Then there came a Hajj season when Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was occupied with fighting, so the people agreed upon Shaybah bin Uthman al-Hajabi, who led the people in Hajj. Then when the year 40 AH came, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred on Friday, the 17th of the blessed month of Ramadan, when he was sixty-three years old.
Imam al-Hakim said: We reflected on these dates and found clear proof for them with an authentic chain.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is extremely weak, because of the weakness of Abu Ma'shar (Najih bin Abd al-Rahman al-Sindi) and al-Hasan bin Ziyad (al-Lu'lu'i), and the unknown status of al-Husayn bin Ali al-Sulami and his paternal uncle Muhammad bin Hassan. And al-Husayn bin Humayd bin al-Rabi' has some weakness.
Important point: According to the historians of the Sirah, the correct view is that the one who sent Abdullah bin Abbas (as leader) of the Hajj in the year 35 AH was Uthman bin Affan, not Ali bin Abi Talib.
Reference / Source: This is narrated from Abdullah bin Abbas himself in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat" (3/60), and from Abdullah bin Umar in al-Daraqutni (2510); both their chains are criticised. But it is established from Amr bin Dinar in Ibn Sa'd (6/337), Umar bin Shabbah in "Tarikh al-Madinah" (4/1269), al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (6/217) and Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (42/438); he said: The people spoke to Ibn Abbas about leading them in Hajj while Uthman was besieged. He went in to Uthman and asked his permission to lead them in Hajj (and he permitted it), so he led them in Hajj, and when he returned Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) had been martyred.
Grading: And its chain is sahih.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise it is established from Abu Wa'il Shaqiq bin Salamah in Ibn Abi Shaybah (Musnad) that Uthman made Ibn Abbas leader of the Hajj in the year he was killed.
Important point: This is also what fits the date of Uthman's martyrdom (18 Dhu al-Hijjah 35 AH according to most), since Ali had not yet assumed the caliphate by then, so how could he have appointed him?
Note / Clarification: Then there is disagreement about who led the Hajj in the years 36, 37 and 38. Al-Waqidi stated with certainty that in those years Ubaydullah bin Abbas (the brother of Abdullah) led the Hajj, and that in the year 39 Ali sent him, and then the people agreed that Shaybah bin Uthman al-Hajabi would be the leader.
