Harun bin Antarah narrates from his father; he said: I saw Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) at al-Khawarnaq. He was seated on a couch, and with him was sitting Aban bin Uthman (the son of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)). He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I hope that I and your father (Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)) will be among those about whom Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has said: "And We shall remove whatever rancour is in their hearts; as brothers, on couches facing one another." [Surah al-Hijr: 47]

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (3) In the manuscripts this name is corrupted into "Ali", whereas several hadiths occur with the author (al-Hakim) in the narration of Ahmad bin Najdah al-Qurashi (Ibn al-Uryan al-Harawi) from Yahya bin Abd al-Hamid (al-Himmani); for this reason we have corrected the name here.

Grading: (1) This report is sahih, and this chain is hasan in corroborations and supporting reports because of Yahya bin Abd al-Hamid (al-Himmani), since he is weak but his narrations are taken into consideration. Narrations have been reported that support this narration of his, but without mention of Aban bin Uthman; rather some of them mention the daughters of Uthman, as will be explained.
Reference / Source: Among these supporting reports is what was narrated by Ahmad in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (729) and "al-'Ilal" (4725), Abu Bakr al-Khallal in "al-Sunnah" (556), Abu Bakr al-Qati'i in his additions to "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (698, 851), al-Khatib in "Tarikh Baghdad" (16/ 618) and Ibn Asakir (39/ 458) via the route of Umm Umar bint Hassan bin Zayd, from her father Abu al-Ghusn Hassan bin Zayd, from Ali. This chain is hasan in corroborations and supporting reports.
Reference / Source: Ibn Asakir (39/ 464) narrated it via the route of Abd al-Rahman bin Uthman bin Muhammad bin Hatib, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ali. This chain is also hasan in corroborations and supporting reports.
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (758), Abu Bakr al-Khallal in "al-Sunnah" (555), Ibn al-A'rabi in his "Mu'jam" (1774), al-Lalaka'i in "Usul al-I'tiqad" (2573) and Ibn Asakir (39/ 459) via the route of Abd al-Rahman bin al-Sharud (or al-Sharid), from Ali. The said Abd al-Rahman is majhul; we could not identify him.
Reference / Source: Abu Bakr al-Qati'i narrated it in his additions to "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1057) and Ibn Asakir (25/ 117-118) via the route of al-Ash'ath bin Abd al-Malik al-Humrani, from Ibn Sirin, from Abu Salih, from Ali.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah, but the narration of Abu Salih (Dhakwan al-Samman) from Ali is mursal.
Reference / Source: Nu'aym bin Hammad narrated it in "al-Fitan" (194, 374) via the route of Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani, and al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (6/ 111) and al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (14/ 37) via the route of Awf al-A'rabi and of Hisham bin Hassan; all three from Ibn Sirin, that Ali said … They did not mention Abu Salih.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah, and this is more likely to be correct than the previous chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-I'tiqad" (page 373) via the route of Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Ali al-Baqir, who said: Ali bin Abi Talib said.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah, but it is also mursal, because Muhammad bin Ali did not live in the time of his great-grandfather Ali.
Reference / Source: Abd al-Razzaq narrated it in his "Tafsir" (1/ 229) and al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (8/ 183) via the route of Qatadah, who said: Ali said.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah, but it is also mursal, because Qatadah did not meet Ali.
Reference / Source: Ibn Asakir (39/ 464-465) narrated it via the route of Asim bin Abi al-Najud in these words: "One of the daughters of Uthman came in to Ali, and he said …"
Grading: There is no harm in its narrators, but it is likewise mursal.
Grading: Taken together, these establish the report as sahih. And Allah the Exalted knows best.
Note / Clarification: A similar statement is also narrated from Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning Talhah bin Ubaydullah, as has passed at number (3388) and will come at number (5713).
Note / Clarification: "Al-Khawarnaq": a palace in al-Hirah, and al-Hirah was a city near Kufah which was the capital of the Lakhmid kings before the (Islamic) conquest.
