Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4605

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both); he said: I was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when suddenly Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived. When he drew near to him (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Uthman! You will be martyred while reciting Surah al-Baqarah, and a drop of your blood will fall upon this statement of Allah: 'So Allah will suffice you against them' [Surah al-Baqarah: 137]. The people of the East and the West will envy you, you will intercede for people as many as (the tribes of) Rabi'ah and Mudar, and on the Day of Resurrection you will be raised as the leader of everyone who was forsaken (in the world)."
Imam al-Hakim says: I have mentioned the musnad reports of this chapter in my book "Maqtal Uthman" (The Killing of Uthman), so I did not consider it appropriate to mention all of them here, since mentioning this much is sufficient. As for the claim made by the innovators that the Commander of the Faithful, Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), assisted in his killing, it is a lie and a slander; on the contrary, there are mass-transmitted (mutawatir) reports:

Grading: (1) This narration is "mawdu'" (fabricated), and the one accused of it is al-Fadl bin Jubayr al-Warraq. Al-Uqayli said about him in "al-Du'afa'" (3/ 444): "His hadith is not corroborated."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: Al-Dhahabi in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak" judged this report to be a lie and accused Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Abd al-Hamid al-Ju'fi of it. But this view of his cannot be accepted, because al-Khatib declared the said Ahmad bin Muhammad thiqah and quoted al-Daraqutni's statement about him: "salih al-hadith". Moreover, he is not alone in it; rather Muhammad bin Ghalib Tamtam corroborated him in part of it, as will come. So the correct view is that the defect in it comes from al-Fadl bin Jubayr al-Warraq. However, it has been narrated through multiple routes that when Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, drops of his blood fell on the mentioned verse; perhaps this is the origin of the report. And Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: Ibn al-Athir narrated it in "Usd al-Ghabah" (3/ 490) via the route of Muhammad bin Ghalib Tamtam, from al-Fadl bin Jubayr al-Warraq, with this same chain, in these words: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Uthman: "You will be killed unjustly, and a drop of your blood will fall on (fa-sayakfikahumu Allah) [Allah will suffice you against them]." Ibn Abbas said: That mark is in the Mushaf to this day.
Details of the narration: Abu Sa'id, the mawla of Abu Usayd, narrated at length the story of the martyrdom of the Commander of the Believers Uthman Dhu al-Nurayn, and mentioned in it that when his hand was struck, the blood spurted onto this verse (fa-sayakfikahumu Allahu wa-huwa al-sami'u al-'alim) [Allah will suffice you against them, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing].
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah (15/ 215-220), Ahmad in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (766), Ibn Hibban (6919) and others with a sahih chain. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Matalib al-Aliyah" (4372): "Its narrators are thiqah, and they heard from one another."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: That his blood fell on the mentioned verse is also narrated in a report of Amrah bint Qays al-Adawiyyah, found with Abdullah bin Ahmad in his additions to "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (817) and his additions to "al-Zuhd" (677), with a chain in which there is no harm.
