Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4596

It is narrated from al-Walid bin Uqbah that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) conquered Makkah, the people of Makkah began bringing their children, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would pass his hand affectionately over their heads and supplicate for them. My father also took me to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and I had been perfumed with "khaluq" (a kind of fragrance). He (peace and blessings be upon him) neither passed his hand over my head nor touched me, and nothing prevented him (peace and blessings be upon him) from that except that my mother had applied "khaluq" to me; so he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not touch me because of that fragrance. Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal says: It is also narrated that on that day this child (out of fear or for some reason) relieved himself, because of which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) found him distasteful, and therefore neither touched him nor supplicated for him. In reality, fragrance does not prevent supplication, nor is a child guilty of the act of someone else; rather, he was deprived of the blessing of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) because this was his state in the prior knowledge of Allah Almighty.
