Hisham bin Urwah narrates from his father that when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them both) began to hasten ahead of each other to lead the funeral prayer. Then Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the two of them: "Both of you step back from me, for I have been given authority (of leading) over your affairs in more than leading the funeral prayer of Sayyiduna Umar; it is I who have been leading you in the obligatory prayers." So it was Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) who led his funeral prayer.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain is weak because of the weakness of Husayn bin Amr al-Anqazi. Technical note / Defect ('illah): And "Ubaydah" mentioned (in the chain) could not be identified, unless he is "Ubayd bin al-Qasim" (a relative of Sufyan al-Thawri) whose name was altered (by a copying error) into "Ubaydah". If it is he, then he is matruk (abandoned), and some accused him (of lying). Important point: It has been authentically established from the preceding hadith of Ibn Umar that it was Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) who led the funeral prayer over Umar. As for Ali and Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them both) hastening forward to lead the prayer over him, that is not narrated through any sound chain. Reference / Source: Among those who narrated it is al-Waqidi, as Ibn Sa'd reported from him in "al-Tabaqat" (3/341) through two mursal routes, in which al-Waqidi is alone, and in one of which a narrator is left unnamed.
