Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4534

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated: 'Allahumma a'izz al-Islama bi-Umar' (O Allah, grant Islam honour and dominance through Umar).
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it; and its supporting narration (shahid) reported from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) is also authentic.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi", and its chain, like the previous one, is "hasan".
Reference / Source: Ibn al-A'rabi narrated it in his "Mu'jam" (275) from Muhammad bin Ghalib with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Asim narrated it in "al-Sunnah" (1263) from al-Hasan bin Ali al-Khallal; al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (10623) and "al-Awsat" (579) (and via him Abu Musa al-Madini in "al-Lata'if" 15) from Ahmad bin al-Qasim bin Musawir al-Jawhari; and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (10623) from Muhammad bin al-Fadl al-Saqati. All three (al-Khallal, al-Jawhari, al-Saqati) narrate it from Sa'id bin Sulayman al-Wasiti: "Ibn Abbas came to Umar when he had been stabbed and said: May Allah reward you with good; did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) not pray that Allah would support the religion through you while the Muslims were hiding in Makkah?" This is the wording of al-Khallal, and the wording of the others is similar.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (9/5696), al-Tirmidhi (3681), Ibn Hibban (6881) and others narrated via Kharijah bin Abd Allah al-Ansari > Nafi' > Ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, strengthen Islam through whichever of these two men is more beloved to You: Abu Jahl or Umar bin al-Khattab." And the more beloved of the two to Allah was Umar bin al-Khattab.
Grading: Al-Tirmidhi called it "sahih" because he inclined towards declaring the aforementioned narrator Kharijah trustworthy (as in the copy of al-Tirmidhi's Jami' we have, in the transmissions of Abu Hamid al-Tajir and Abu Dharr).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The scholars differ about Kharijah, so his hadith is graded "hasan" provided he does not bring anything munkar, and here he has not brought anything munkar. Perhaps this hadith (about the supplication) is a different hadith from the narration of Ibn Umar from Ibn Abbas (about the glad tidings), because their contexts differ.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The context of Ibn Umar's narration is supported by the "mursal" narration of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab, which is in Ibn Sa'd (3/247), Ibn Shabbah's "Tarikh al-Madinah" (2/657) and Ibn Asakir (44/26). Its chain is "hasan", as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Isabah" (4/590), and the mursal reports of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab are proof because of his eminence. It is also supported by the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud that comes later with the author, but its chain is "da'if" (weak).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And the mursal narration of Uthman bin al-Arqam (is also a supporting report), which will come with the author under no. (6250), but its chain too is "da'if".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And the hadith of Khabbab bin al-Aratt, which is in Ibn Sa'd (3/248), al-Bazzar (2119) and others, but its chain too is "da'if". However, the context of Ibn Abbas's narration is supported by the next hadith of A'ishah.
